Acerca de esta escucha
The first-ever practical, compassionate, and comprehensive guide to dying - and living fully until you do.
“There is nothing wrong with you for dying,” palliative care Doctor BJ Miller and Shoshana Berger write in A Beginner’s Guide to the End. “Our ultimate purpose here isn’t so much to help you die as it is to free up as much life as possible until you do.”
Theirs is a clear-eyed and big-hearted action plan for approaching the end of life, created to help listeners feel more in control of an experience that so often seems anything but. Their audiobook offers everything from step-by-step instructions for how to do your paperwork and navigate the health-care system to answers to questions you might be afraid to ask your doctor, like whether or not sex is still okay when you’re sick. You’ll be walked through how to break the news to your employer, whether to share old secrets with your family, how to face friends who might not be as empathetic as you’d hoped, and how to talk to your children about your will. (Don’t worry: If anyone gets snippy, it’ll likely be their spouses, not them.) There are also lessons for survivors, like how to shut down a loved one’s social media accounts, clean out the house, and write a great eulogy.
An honest, surprising, and detailed-oriented guide to the most universal of all experiences, A Beginner’s Guide to the End is the one audiobook that everyone needs.

In Being Mortal, best-selling author Atul Gawande tackles the hardest challenge of his profession: how medicine can not only improve life but also the process of its ending. Medicine has triumphed in modern times, transforming birth, injury, and infectious disease from harrowing to manageable. But in the inevitable condition of aging and death, the goals of medicine seem too frequently to run counter to the interest of the human spirit.

Die Wise does not offer seven steps for coping with death. It does not suggest ways to make dying easier. It pours no honey to make the medicine go down. Instead, with lyrical prose, deep wisdom, and stories from his two decades of working with dying people and their families, Stephen Jenkinson places death at the center of the discussion and asks us to behold it in all its painful beauty. Die Wise teaches the skills of dying, skills that have to be learned in the course of living deeply and well.

You get ready to die the way you get ready for a trip. Start by realizing you don't know the way. Listen to a few travel guides. Study the language, look at maps, gather equipment. Let yourself imagine what it will be like. Pack your bags. This book is one of those travel guides - a guide to preparing for your own death and the deaths of people close to you. The fact of death is hard to believe. Sallie Tisdale explores our fears and all the ways death and talking about death make us uncomfortable - but she also explores its intimacies and joys.

Modern medical technology is allowing us to live longer and fuller lives than ever before. But with changes in the way we understand medicine come changes in the way we understand death. Once a familiar and gentle process, death has come to be something from which we shy away, preferring to fight it desperately than to accept its inevitability. Palliative care has a long tradition in Britain, where Dr. Kathryn Mannix has practiced it for 30 years. In this book, she shares beautifully crafted stories from a lifetime of caring for the dying.

Interweaving evocative stories of Puri's family and the patients she cares for, That Good Night is a stunning meditation on impermanence and the role of medicine in helping us to live and die well, arming listeners with information that will transform how we communicate with our doctors about what matters most to us.

But what do you do when you face the big decisions of life—the "wild problems" of who to marry, whether to have children, where to move, how to forge a life well-lived—that can’t be solved by measurement or calculation? In Wild Problems, beloved host of EconTalk Russ Roberts offers puzzled rationalists a way to address these wild problems.

Then her father suffered a stroke that left him incapable of easily finishing a sentence or showering without assistance. Her mother was thrust into full-time caregiving, and Katy became one of the 24 million Americans who help care for aging parents. In an effort to correct a minor and non - life threatening heart arrhythmia, doctors outfitted her father with a pacemaker.

When your biggest superpower is also your most critical weakness, it helps to have a manual on how to control it. Entrepreneurs are creative, bold thinkers and risk-takers capable of great accomplishments. At the same time, for every success story, there is a counter story of an epic collapse caused by a lack of a moral compass, values, or proper guidance. Jeff Hays knows the highs and the lows having ridden that rollercoaster many times in his life and career and provides a much-needed user’s manual for entrepreneurs everywhere and the people in their work and personal lives.

Historia
When a loved one dies, the pain of loss can feel unbearable—especially in the case of a traumatizing death that leaves us shouting, “NO!” with every fiber of our body. The process of grieving can feel wild and nonlinear—and often lasts for much longer than other people, the nonbereaved, tell us it should. Organized into fifty-two short chapters, Bearing the Unbearable is a companion for life’s most difficult times, revealing how grief can open our hearts to connection, compassion, and the very essence of our shared humanity.

A New York Times best seller! Brokenness doesn't only find us in the big things - things like illness, hardship, or grief. It can find you in the everyday. Learn to walk in a way that glorifies Jesus and receive freedom, not beyond your fear and pain, but within it. We are fragile and we know it. Sometimes, living with Christ in a messed-up world feels less like victory and more like walking uphill. The Broken Way is simple in presentation, written in Ann’s unique style - a new way for desperate Christians in need of a fresh revelation of the grace of God.

I blame Anderson Cooper
After listening to Anderson Cooper’s latest podcast about grief and his interview with BJ Miller, I had to listen to this book. Spot on about so many things. Wish I hadn’t had to learn the hard way but I learn best this way. As a twenty year ICU nurse and losing my own family, I feel I’m almost at expert level. Highly recommend this book to anyone that relies on breathing to live.

Factual, practical & clear
I hope I will dont need this book soon. But its good to organize, simplify and review your stuff, values and legacy often for living a good life, not just before death. Reminding oneself about death can clean out unecessary ruminations and what really matters can stand out. If you cant see it anyway, maybe a good psychotherapy can help you sort your thoughts (and sometimes bringing your consiousness from head to body can do the same). Some practical advice (legal and health insurance) is suited for Americas health system, so its not tell you much if you are from Europe for example (yet it can lead to gratitude for our health system if you are not from USA...). For me, most valuable part is that about fear of death aka mother of all fears. I don't that much fear dyings as I have a problem with being dead since I can't imagine it, maybe I also fear some brain injury or dementia (again because it hard to imagine, hard to grasp with reason). I authors cites Buddhists and stoics: coming close to a truth is always accompanied by fear (that gives me meaning in death) and peace was before your birth and will be after your death - and it's regardless if you're ateist or believer in some sort of way (that gives me comfort) - I am simplyfiyng here, but I gues everyone have some belief more or less.

Wonderful, important and practical
This is a book I think about quite often. I read it over a year ago and what I learned has given me great insight into the experiences that so many of my clients are going through. I’m a psychotherapist and deal with those who are dying but also the various family members who have been close to someone who died or is dying. The practical advice in this book allowed me to offer many useful suggestions and insight into the numerous ways that death affects us all. On a more personal note, as my parents age I’m confronted with the fact that it will be my turn to experience that fact of life and hope that I do it in a way that is meaningful without regrets. I learned so much for this book, the authors communicated the complex process of dying and caring for the dying in a user friendly practical and compassionate way that offered forethought about a subject that is not often discussed. They are brilliant.

So helpful; I wish I would have read it sooner
I bought and listened to most of this book on my last 8 hour drive to visit my dad. He was in the final stages of terminal brain cancer and had just gone to stay in a nursing home after my stepmom finally conceded that he needed more care than she and I could handle. I knew he didn't have long, even though he and my stepmom refused to consider the possibility that he may not pull through.
This book helped me to find strength, prepare for what was coming, and have some idea of what to do and what was happening. Dad ended up having even less time than I had thought but I was able to keep myself together enough to hopefully comfort him and ease his passing.
I really appreciate the authors' compassionate yet no-nonsense presentation of these difficult topics. One line that stuck with me was, "death isn't the end of life, it's a part of life."
I recommend this book to anyone, particularly those facing terminal illness, even if you don't think you need it yet, it's good info to have in your back pocket just in case.
