THE EPIC NEW EAGLES OF THE EMPIRE NOVEL FROM BESTSELLING AUTHOR SIMON SCARROW
The city of Rome. The most dangerous place in the Empire. The fates of military heroes Macro and Cato lie in Emperor Nero's bloody hands . . .

AD 62. Under the reckless and tumultuous leadership of Emperor Nero, Rome is descending into near-anarchy and conspiracy. The brutal execution of 400 slaves has led to rioting and discontent. Only the strongest soldier could maintain control. And so Nero turns to Prefect Cato to help save his reign from collapse.

Cato has been lying low after a heroic campaign to quash the Boudica uprising. Now he is called upon to serve again. As the new Prefect of the Urban Cohorts in Rome, Cato needs a loyal and proven officer by his side. Centurion Macro is willing to step up.

War and rebellion hold few fears for these seasoned veterans. But the politics and intrigue of Rome make every day as perilous as the battlefield. And the fates of both men, and of the empire, lie in the hands of the most volatile emperor of the age. Death awaits anyone who dares to defy Nero.

Cato and Macro will need to call on all their experience, native cunning and bottomless courage to survive in this epic new adventure of Roman military heroism.

Wish cato would pick a side. He cherishes Rome and while pretending to be honorable by excusing himself as a soldier following orders he is contradictory and kills others for following orders he personally finds abhorrent. Also having a hero help prop up Nero in a few books garners disdain for Cato. His excuse of hating politics an only goes so far. Hopefully he’ll realize that by believing he has abstained from politics he has always been playing at politics all along. Regardless if Nero is a misunderstood political ploy of historians, the history or propaganda surrounding the emperor made it very difficult to cheer for Cato’s decisions.

Good. But ending could have been better

Amazing story. Best I have listened to in the series with the exception of the 2nd.

2nd Favorite of Series

I didn’t think I was going to enjoy this one as much as the previous few - in the past I always think the series takes a slight downturn when Palace politics play too big a role, but this was great from beginning to end.

Cato’s leadership and intellect were on full display while Macro’s irreplaceable military now how and ability to survive any situation take center stage in a story where all those skills are needed as well as the ability to walk the delicate political right rope required of Emperor Nero.

My only disappointment was how their relationship with Vespasian was affected, but I don’t want to reveal anymore about that in a review. Listen with confidence!

Narrator is phenomenal , wish the story continued to be longer. Time flew way too quickly listening to this story.

The narration throughout this entire series is outstanding. I can’t wait for the next instalment. The story develops brilliantly throughout all 24 books in the series. First class historical fiction!
