Majestic listening

Majestic!! I have for many years wanted to go through the scriptures but due to limited eyesight I had all but given up!! Michael York's reading is beyond anything I expected. The music in the background makes it so much more powerful! I listen to it as I go to sleep at night! Pour yourself a cup of tea, sit back in a comfortable chair and prepare to be transported to another place and another time. What a value for one credit!! I am a believer in audible.com! Thank you!!

The best Audio Bible on the market

Despite using the NKJV of the Bible, this is probably the best audio version of the Bible on the market. It's not only a full cast of voices bringing the characters and people in the Bible to life, the sound effects are not so irritating as with other audio Bibles.

It is a long listen, however! If you're not a devoted Christian, maybe it would be better to download buy the specific individual books of the Bible.

I can heartily recommend this excellent production to anyone who is prepared to make the time to listen to it.

Awsome

First of all, New King James is a great version of Bible. (Probably the Best) As you probably all know, it's the most similar to original vesion than any other English version. Second of all, the narration, the sound effects are just splendid, flawless. It has the WHOLE Bible in it. You can carry the whole Bible in your ipod.

Best value on Audible

I think this is the best deal on Audible. I'm not a believer whatsoever, but I always appreciate opening up my world to different viewpoints.

I read a lot of books on atheism (and theology) and they really don't put the whole of the New Testament in proper context when they criticize Christianity because they often look at the pieces that make up the whole instead of the whole being explained by the pieces (before you can understand a sentence you first must understand the words and to understand the words you must first understand the sentence). This audio book gave me a chance to understand the whole because it was so easy to listen to and I got to finish the New Testament in about a week on my daily bike rides (I ride a lot of miles on my bike every week).

Science is indeterminate. A basic statement that is shown to be factually wrong doesn't mean that the whole edifice is incorrect. It just means that within the whole edifice there is a misunderstanding somewhere within the web of belief ('epistemic holism'). For example, within Quantum physics there is no cause and effect, superposition and duality exist (particle is both a wave and particle at the same time). Each of these are against the fundamental laws of logic, but it doesn't mean that all of physics is wrong. It just means there is a misunderstanding somewhere.

I started with the Old Testament but that was sort of a mistake. I found it tedious beyond belief and gave up on this audio book. In the mean time, I read "On the Nature of Things" (written slightly before Jesus) and that made me want to listen to the book of Ecclesiastics (by far my favorite book in the Old Testament) and that made me realize how pleasant this audio book could really be.

The Acts of the Apostles is probably the most important book in the bible for its historicity (at least that's my opinion, and I suspect Wiki would say so too). The story as spoken really flows beautifully. I never really picked up on that as I had previously would just randomly read pieces of the New Testament but never really read it cover to cover as it really needs to be in order to fully understood. I never realized how intelligent The Book of Hebrews was (I would say it's the most intelligently written of the New Testament books, and Wiki seemed to support that too).

My only point is that by listening to this version of the Bible one really gets to understand the Bible as a whole and gets a feeling for why it's such an interesting book. Reading it never gave me that perspective the way listening to this has (when I read I take the feeling out, but listening puts it back in for me).

Paul seemed to have gotten repetitive in his Epistles. He seemed mostly to talk about what he believed not necessarily what he thought was truth as such. He doesn't seem to think women are the equal of men, slavery seems to be okay, a whole lot of people are "deserving of death" (fornicators, drunkards (too bad for me), idolators, and others). A lot of his arguments appeal to the Old Testament truth of Adam and Eve. There is definitely a belief in prophecies (don't go to Jerusalem or you'll be arrested warned a person and they took it seriously), and the Holy Spirit can kill if you lie about holding back money while giving to the Church (or Peter and James).

Everyone who believes has their strong beliefs about the bible. I don't believe therefore I don't have a strong opinion regarding the bible one way or another, but I really enjoyed this version of the Bible because I got a peek into why it means almost nothing to me except for helping me to better understand Western Civilization since it had such a large role in forming our civilization and who we became. Also, I would recommend this audio version for any one including believers as well as non-believers because it flows beautifully together as a whole and allows one to listen fairly fast thus helping understand the book as a whole not in pieces as often happens when one reads the Bible on ones own.

Formatting is very awkward

I agree with others that the formatting is very awkward in this rendition. The reading performances are mostly very good, and there are minimal distracting background sounds and music. (If you just want a pure Bible reading with no "dramatic" presentation, this is not the book for you. Still, this version does a nice job of not overly dramatizing.) The big critique of this version is that the formatting makes it virtually impossible to make content selection. It downloads in 17 parts, and you have no idea how the 66 books of the Bible are distributed among these parts. I had to bump around through several parts to try to find where the Old Testament ends and the New Testament begins. Within each part, the "chapters" breakdown into the actual chapters of each book of the Bible, hence countless chapters per part. If you click on a particular chapter, you have no idea what book you are in (unless you happen to luck upon the start of a new book, which is announced at the beginning of the chapter). Having read (and listened to) the Bible several times, I can more or less figure out what book I'm in, but anyone who hasn't spent a LOT of time in the Bible would be completely lost unless listening "cover to cover." Finally, there is awkward and excessive silence between each of the many chapters, making the flow quite disjointed. These are all unfortunate oversights and/or flaws, since this book would be pretty amazing were it more user-friendly (hence my overall rating of 4 despite these serious formatting problems).

Still, it is the Bible, and for those like me who enjoy it in almost any form, it is worth the download, since it is a somewhat more "entertaining" presentation.

Unexpectedly outstanding!

Where does The Word of Promise Complete Audio Bible: NKJV rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It is another one of my No. 1's, since some are so good I can't give them less than a 5.

Any additional comments?

I was expecting a relatively vanilla reading of the old classic, which I was better acquainted with several decades ago. I wanted to refresh on some of the goodie olde stories, especially Old Testament.

But I was immediately swept away by the delivery. I admit I was intrigued when I read that the narration was done by some bona fide movie stars, and that there was an original musical score to go along... but those ideas just made me flinch a bit, half expecting this big corny, overly dramatized performance by a bunch of overly holy rollers.

Instead, what was happening starting with "In the beginning..." was an addictive, almost hypnotic sensual experience between the indescribably perfect rendering by the voice that came on, with the identically perfect coloration of the background score, that indeed added and never detracted from the content. I was blown away.

And there is not only music for background, but very tasteful, subtle sound effects which I find add to the stories... you might hear, vaguely in the background, the sound of horses' hooves, or the voices of crowds, or a baby crying. These additions never infringe on the main action, but give it depth and realism.

I am most of the way through the Old Testament now and I must say, even all the otherwise-boring readings of the genealogies and other various long listings, are made completely inoffensive by the wonderful talent of the narrator, together with the soothing and beautiful score.

I have ONE criticism, however, but it is at least just half my idiosyncrasy. This reading is the New King James Version, but the old King James is the one I love and find more poetic and beautiful in the language. However, for the purpose of this reading, I am glad, and I see the sense, of using this version for today's audience. Now comes the "but" part. If I hear the word "awesome" one more time, I just might have to jump off a cliff! I won't say this word is ABUSED, but I dislike the word any time it is used more than once a lifetime. It seems this word is rather freely used in the newer Christian movement, especially in some of the music I have heard. But to me, it means nothing and is just a substitute for a real descriptive word, and I got my dander up after hearing it about the 5th time so far...

I had been wanting to stumble upon just such a reading of the whole Bible, because I need mental fuel to help with my chores, and have no time for sitting and reading anymore. But at the same time, I was hesitant around the edges, worrying about the performance and whether any editorializing might come along with the reading. Also, the price had to be right! So, when the big sale came along, I jumped at the chance to grab this. But never did I expect it to be the first-rate, highest quality piece of work that it is.

I would encourage any person who has any interest AT ALL in the Bible, regardless of religious background, to indulge in this set of books. It is the most painless way imaginable to increase your familiarity and understanding of the historical events of way back when (some of which, by the way, seem to be getting confirmed by archeology lately). You won't even experience it as a lesson learned. You will "be there".

Just an amazing experience. Get it.

Wonderful and engaging

I've been listening to the Word of Promise Complete Audio Bible for a decade now, nearly every day (in the morning while I do my back exercises and make coffee! ;D), so I hear the entire book more than twice each year. It works GREAT if you're starting at the beginning and going straight through - this is something people rarely do with the Bible and it's not what I recommend for people who are new to reading the Bible, but for those who've read it (or most of it) before, it's a terrific way to read or listen to scripture, because you can begin to see the entire "arc" of God's plan and interaction with humanity.

IF you're trying to find specific locations, it's a bit of a challenge - and always has been: initially the book downloaded in 17 parts and a fellow reviewer kindly posted the breakdown of specific Bible books and chapters covered in each of those parts. But when I got a new phone the book downloaded in one *enormous* file, so my own list of books/chapters/parts was no longer helpful. Thus I created for myself the breakdown of the 66 books and where they start/end according to the long list of chapters for the new download format, and I include it below.

The latest iteration has the book downloading as one massive file BUT it's broken into the *books* of the Bible: so the Genesis is one big chapter, nearly five hours long; Exodus is the second chapter (four hours long); Leviticus is third (2:44:11) - and so on. As long as you want to listen to an entire book of the Bible, that's fine - but it's hard to move around within the book unless you have a fairly good idea *where* you want to be, in relation to the length of that book. The book of Ruth is less than 18 minutes long, the book of Psalms is over 6 hours long (the longest, although Jeremiah clocks in at 5:03:39).

There is an error with the book of Revelation: first, it's listed as "Revelations" (there should be no "s" on the end) and it's less than 4 minutes long; THEN there's the "End Credits," which are 1:13:31 long - this break is clearly accidental.

Despite the problematic organization of this audio book (what it really needs is to broken down by books AND chapters), this is still a wonderful way to simply LISTEN to the Bible, full of wonderful performances. I hope you enjoy this audio book half as much as I do, because then you'll really be enjoying it!

Engaging and easy to listen to

What did you love best about The Word of Promise Complete Audio Bible: NKJV?

I have been trying to ready straight through the Bible for years and every time I get hung up somewhere between Exodus and Duteronomy...Well not this time! I love the voice acting it really brings the people to life... I began to recognize voices ..hey was that Jason Alexander as Joseph...sure was and he did a great job.

What did you like best about this story?

Well its the greatest ever told ..enough said

What about the narrators’s performance did you like?

I really loved the multiple voices..often when reading you can forget who it is that is speaking, but with the unique actors and voices for each character it makes it easy to follow.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I am supprised by how much I am enjoying listening to it. I had expected it to be a better reading than most but I didnt realize that I would choose to listen to it while I was eating dinner rather than watching TV

Any additional comments?

I listen to this on my way to and from work mostly, 15-20 min each way... in the harder chapters (brought a silver bowl worth 20 schekles according to the scheckel of the sanctuary filled with....) I was able to power through and found a couple gems because of it, the story of Kora and of Nadab and Abahu stories I usually miss because of the content around them. I highly recomend this audiobook.

Love listening to this audio Bible!

It's awesome to have the Holy Bible available in radio theater format and not compromised and not abridged! I have listened from Genesis through Revelation. I also appreciate the indexing for books and chapters. I've used it often to listen to select passages. I keep it downloaded on my phone. I can listen anytime! Love listening in my car! Thank you to all the people who took time to make this version possible!
