As a forensic psychiatrist at New York's leading institution of its kind, Dr. Lily Dominick has evaluated the mental states of some of the country's most dangerous psychotics. But the strangely compelling client she interviewed today - a man with no name, accused of the most twisted crime - struck her as somehow different from the others, despite the two impossible claims he made. First, that he is more than 200 years old and personally inspired Mary Shelley, Robert Louis Stevenson, and Bram Stoker in creating the three novels of the 19th century that define the monstrous in the modern imagination. Second, that he's Lily's father. To discover the truth - behind her client, her mother's death, herself - Dr. Dominick must embark on a journey that will threaten her career, her sanity, and ultimately her life.

Fusing the tension of a first-rate thriller with a provocative take on where thrillers come from, The Only Child will keep you up until its last unforgettable revelation.

Could not put this down. This particular genre is fascinating to me and always has been. There were times in the telling by Christina where I felt like I was standing next to the demonic presence of Michael as he spoke to his daughter. The part where Lilly reads the letter from Michael on the airplane is especially creepy and well done. Nice big twist at the end. Very entertaining.

Chilling

Loved it, want sure initially what to expect but enjoyed the ride. It was a "page turner".

Fun listen

The narrator did an amazing job making "It" show all the different emotions but I felt that the story was lacking and I found myself repeating multiple chapters because I lost interest. That being said, I did finish it, usually when this happens more than twice I decide not to finish the book so that's saying something.

Okay but I did finish it

Any additional comments?

Going into it, I didn't see the actual story until it was too late. I was somewhat disappointed and thought about turning it off. But as it went on, I became more emotionally invested. You could see the plot and ending from a mile away. It was still entertaining. Overall, MEH

Interesting Concept; Poorly Executed

A twist of a story. Don’t want to give it away! Acouple of swearwords no sex. I would say PG-13.

Interesting

I loved the way the author combined the stories that we all know into a new story and a new legend. The performance of the reading was really good too.

Wasn’t Expecting That

sort of interesting but I am not a connoisseur of Vampires and thought this book was supposed to be case study of difficult child in NYC.
the very quiet tone of reader diminished my enjoyment.

Needs more sound.

I listened to both Oracle offerings and loved them, so I thought I'd try something else by the same author. Unfortunately, this was not as interesting. The characters are neither likeable nor relatable. By midpoint in the book you know where they will end up, it's the only thing that makes sense, as does the outcome. With no surprises and no redemption, there just isn't much here to like.

Just meh.

I guess I’ve never really wondered where Stoker, Shelley and Stevenson got the idea for their “monsters” until I started reading this selection and found that approach to this Pyper story, really enjoyable!
If you enjoy classic tales like Dracula, Frankenstein and Dr. Jeckyl & Mr. Hyde, you may also enjoy this exploration of all three in one.

Very interesting adaptation of three classics in one!

This was disappointing on many levels. None of the characters were interesting or even likeable. The narrator was fine though her voice was low, some stuff was hard to hear. Many things were outright just not believable, even for a paranormal type storyline. The protagonist does stuff that no one with her supposed experience in criminal psychology would ever do. If I hadn't been on a long drive, I probably would have DNF'd this one.

If you loved Oracle, give this a pass.
