Good Story, Character names confusing.

I enjoyed the story, well written and a good pace. Looking forward to the next book! The only reason I didn't give 5 stars was I found the characters' names confusing. I couldn't tell if he was talking about his friend or his dog until I realized the context. I'll listen again, see if I can work it out.

Book does not stand on its own

Be forewarned you will need to buy book 2 because this one offers no closure.

Science Free Science Fiction

I tend towards time travel as I am attracted to the "what if" paradoxes, novel logic, and scientific questions it poses.

This novel is time travel only in the way Rumple Stilskin is. [spoiler] There is a "shimmering door" that takes the protagonist on a single trip into a stone age future. The mechanism is never explained. Future Oregon is filled with perfect humans of large stature and giant monstrous bears, wolves, snakes, cockroaches and even prairie dogs. Again, no explanation as to how or why this is so.

All in all, this book reads more like a fantasy novel... just not my cup of tea.

Character development, world-building, language creation, and plot are good. Excellent blow-by-blow description of combat (again, not my thing but wanted to acknowledge). Interesting social commentary on our society's distinctions with conflict and technology.

Has a few silly flaws, such as not understanding that the largest pinecones grow on the largest branches, lower in the tree, and out toward the branch tips (female cones).

Narration for the audio book is first rate... one of the reasons I stuck with it to the end of the first book.

I recognize that many will enjoy this book. Just wanted to explain what did and didn't work for me.

Only okay

There were just too many flaws in the story and the writing for me to rate it any better.

First, the decision by the main character that gets his adventure started was too stupid to begin with. Despite warnings and everything else he can't restrain himself for even part of a day to go to his daughter's birthday first before going exploring just struck me as too much of a forced character decision. Even trying to overlook that I kept running into other struggles. The natives at best awkwardly straddling a line between being too simple but still somehow understanding what should have been completely foreign concepts too easily. The "battle" scene is clearly not written by someone with experience for anyone who has read more war-rich books. And I could go on. Overall not awful, I've read much worse, and it had its moments, but I have a hard time recommending it when I can think of so many other better stories.

Excellent time travel story

I enjoyed the story and will be listening to the entire series. The narrator is perfect for this one. I love a well designed time travel tale and this one was done very well. The character names can get a bit confusing at times but it makes sense within the world presented. The character building itself is very nicely done and I enjoyed the way characters interacted and grew together. I can’t wait to see (hear) what happens next.

Hopeful look into a possible future

I fully enjoyed both the story and the performance of this book. I had never encountered this author before, but I found his work fresh and hopeful. Although he has the far distant future stripped of technology, most of the characters are nicer and kinder than the majority of today’s people. Although he still has power hungry bad guys, the average person is not as full of hate as so many are today. It left me hopeful of us growing in our humanity to others.

Stayed interested from the start

Thoroughly enjoyed this book and can’t wait to get through the next! The narrator also does a great job keeping you engaged with his portrayal of the characters.

Every name sounds the same

I did not like all the names sounding the same. It was annoying! They obviously spoke more advanced than caveman so why?

Just got audible this was my first book and it was great

I love time travel books and movies and this was very different and excellent character building from the beginning. So therefore I liked it and will continue on with audible.

Alex Hawk

After reading Shawn Inman's first series of 12 books, I was thrilled to find his Alex Hawk Time Travel books and am just as happy with this series. Mr. Hawk is an imaginative and exciting author. He has built quite a believable and loving society of people. Alex Hawk and his dog are fantastic characters. I loved this book every bit as much.
