The details. So real and present that you can smell the horse dung.

I am a huge fan of Christian Cameron books. I listen to the Arimnestos books frequently. I was so so happy when I found that this series had been re-released with the superlative Peter Noble narrating.

With Christian's writing style Peter Noble has the gift of making it seem like any moment I might turn and ask William Gold a question or share a glass of wine. Everything is real and present in a way that few book can do.

And the details, I could go on about the detail in Mr. Cameron's book and have to the weariness of my family. But it is those same details that nail me to these books again and again. There's always something more to learn and I treasure that. In fact I find other historical novels very thin and lacking now. I hope more in the genre take note.

Another detail I really appreciate is that the characters may be at war but they still have lives! Other historical novels seem to just exist for the bloodshed. Mr Cameron gets you to CARE about the main character first so battles have more meaning....they are part of how the character grows. Just like everything else he experiences. But the books are never just about the battles. That is a quality also lacking in other books of this genre.

As my final comment I'd like to say the Mr Cameron's books live right next to my Discworld books....the highest compliment I can give any living author.
