Impossible object to solve. Kidnapping dragons. Rebuilding a civilization. Punching a moon.

His students scattered to the four corners of the planet, Drew finally has some time to do maintenance on his own little world. The first thing he does, of course, is to get all the dragons drunk and then kidnap them. Letting them simmer in a bootcamp of draconic design in order to teach the millenia old reptiles discipline and new tricks is sure to work.

His students continue their duty of protecting their corners. They spend their time living as queens, being surrounded by a rather fuzzy harem, ruling with iron fists, or being loved by all.

People do keep finding these mysterious super heavy items, and they don’t seem to belong in this plane of existence. Also, there is the small problem of the mind controlling moon. And his draconic lover just so happens to be in danger - again.

Andries Louws's "Dao of Magic" stands as a memorable cult classic in the annals of indie progression fantasy. More than just a story, the five-book series represents a distinct and influential experiment in genre-blending, fusing the power-scaling concepts of Eastern Xianxia with a deeply irreverent, Western-style comedic voice. Though it remains unfinished, its unique identity and creative energy cemented its place as a beloved, if cautionary, tale within the fantasy community.
The Irreverent God
The core appeal of the series is its unforgettable protagonist, Drew. He is a walking paradox: an ancient cultivator of near-omnipotent power who possesses the internal monologue of a snarky, pop-culture-savvy slacker. This juxtaposition is the engine of the entire series. Drew confronts cosmic horrors and world-ending threats not with stoic wisdom, but with the weary exasperation of an IT professional dealing with a persistent bug. This anachronistic characterization deconstructs the traditional "wise master" trope, making a god-like figure relatable and humorous.
Complementing the protagonist is an intricate "hard magic" system that treats cultivation with an almost scientific rigor. Louws presents qi manipulation and enlightenment through the lens of programming and physics, creating a world where immense power feels systematic and logical. This blend of a comedic, overpowered protagonist and a well-defined magic system created a powerful hook that drew in a dedicated fanbase.
A Legacy of Dissonance
For all its creativity, the series is defined by a fundamental tension. Its greatest strength was also its most common criticism: tonal dissonance. Drew's constant quips and low-stakes attitude, while funny, often served to undercut the narrative's dramatic tension. It was difficult for readers to feel the weight of an apocalyptic threat when the protagonist treated it with mild annoyance.
This issue extended to the supporting cast, who often felt underdeveloped in comparison to the protagonist's overwhelming presence. Female characters, in particular, frequently fell into familiar tropes, serving as plot devices or romantic interests rather than fully realized individuals with their own agency. The result is a series that excels in its moment-to-moment humor and action but struggles to build lasting emotional depth or a sense of genuine peril.
The Unwritten Chapter
Ultimately, the legacy of "Dao of Magic" is inseparable from its status as an unfinished work. Following the release of Book 5 in 2017, the author went on an indefinite hiatus, leaving the story's major plotlines unresolved. The series ends not with a conclusion, but with a sudden silence. It remains a brilliant, frustrating, and inventive saga that showcases the creative freedom of indie publishing while also serving as a poignant reminder of a story without an end.

I have really enjoyed this series, and I hope there’s more books to come. But I really don’t like that the MC let’s Re Haan and his students walk all over him in this book, when in the previous books he was very clearly in charge, and just did what ever he wanted. I love how lighthearted these books have been, but this one kind of just made me cringe and feel bad about the way the MC acts. I’m enjoying the plot development though, despite the change in the MC’s demeanor. The dirty jokes and crude humor is awesome too, I know some people don’t like it but I’m a huge fan and I find myself laughing out loud sometimes.

MC went from assertive badass to submissive pleaser

*Drew enters tree* moon's haunted

Anyone else: What?

*cocks dual-element sword* moon's haunted

all around great, could use some more advancement for the main character though, that's my only gripe

Great cultivation series

I have been a long time martial artist and always try to cultivate. I love seeing interesting stories like this. It is a modern take on some of the old classic Chinese wuxia tales.
