Shaky writing leans on great ideas

I love the ideas this book presents when it comes to its world. Unfortunately it doesn't follow through on them satisfactorily. The characters are all one dimensional. They often act in ways that don't make sense to advance a predictable plot. Some of the characters are downright painful to listen to.

Probably should have read in print

I'll start with the bad so I can finish on a positive note.

I am not happy with any of the narrators, and I usually like Emily Woo Zeller. I eventually got used to Feodor Chin, whom I didn't like, but I can never forgive him for doing Mephi, one of the best characters by far, as Donald Trump. Not cute, not cute at all. Nadine Naudus has a nice voice, but she mispronounces a LOT of words. It's distracting. No, annoying. Especially when she says lye-berry instead of library.

And the production really needed to do some volume adjusting between the various narrators.

In terms of the story, I kind of hated Phalue and didn't buy her relationship with Ranami. Ranami is an okay character, but 100% unbelievable as a social/political activist. The rebel faction was by far the weakest part of the book, and I wonder if the author has ever actually met an activist. And how the storylines of these two characters were resolved was treacly sweet and like I said - inauthentic.

Thankfully, there is good. The world building is fantastic, the other characters are fuller, especially Lin (I had trouble with Jovis bc of the narration, might have liked him better in print, but he is a pretty good character). Sand feels more like a setup for the next book, but carries just enough mystery and significance to add to the plot and pique my interest in what is to come.

The magic in this world is fascinating, and the mysterious past and strangeness of the islands making up the empire make me want to push forward, I just need to decide in which format.

Fantasy Mystery Vibes

I have picked up and put down this book a few times. Goes through a few characters different POV throughout the book. Decided to stick with it, and did start to enjoy it when I reached the half way point. Interesting story and some great twists at the end, but I usually read EPIC fantasy books, so I think this book just wasn’t my cup a tea. May be a good fantasy book for someone that enjoys the mystery genre.

Decent story

The story wasn’t bad, enjoyed the performances but it didn’t grab me. My favorite part of the story was the mysterious adopted animal that the hero found at sea.
