Resumen del Editor

Yaro Anatoly commands the most feared regiment on the continent. His loyalty to the king has seen him wage war in the savage wilderness of Vorgar, the lawless free cities, and in Akasha, the domain of the southern princes.

But when the death of a saint triggers a revolution at home, Yaro finds his own loyalties divided. Can he really serve a king who hates his own people? And who are these new gods?

The Black Hussars is a stand-alone novella, set in the days prior to the events that unfold in the Plagueborne trilogy.

Good Read

I received a free copy of the audiobook version of this for review. This is a solid military fantasy novella about Yaro the commander of an elite unit of bear cavalry. Lots of lore and excellent world building and characters just a little to short as I wanted more but off to a good start also really enjoyed the Narrator. I’d say give it a try won’t take to long for you to get done with it.

Very Interesting Short Story

The Black Hussars was a very interesting short story, with a very cool premise and was quite entertaining. I have never read any other books or novels that take place in this world but I was still able to understand what was going on but If I had read/listened to any of the previous books I think I would of appreciated it even more.

The book follows Yaro the Commander of the Black Hussars who are Bear Cavalry. That's right BEAR CAVALRY, they ride Friggin Bears which is insanely cool. Yaro has been given a mission by the King which he doesn't really feel good about but really has no choice but to comply with.

The narration by Scott Miller is done quite well and I do enjoy his accent work. The story and military aspects are very interesting and the story seems fairly deep for a short story that is only 2 hours long.

An Interesting Introduction

I received this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

Mitchell Lüthi's novel follows The Black Hussars, a regiment loyal to King Behan. They are fierce, highly trained warriors who ride bears into battle. Lüthi shares history, lore and commentary to flesh out the world of Greater Virren. His novel portrays a very brief image of Virren, but he does a good job alluding to a much larger, more intricate world. None of the characters are particularly likable, as most come across as prideful and brash. Nonetheless, the narrative moves quickly enough to remain interesting throughout.

Scott Miller narrates this book, and he does a fine job. He portrays emotion in each of the characters, and no two characters sound alike. His work isn't overly compelling, but it get's the job done. His narration never detracts from the experience.

The biggest drawback is that The Black Hussers is incredibly short, clocking in at just over two hours. It's difficult to form a strong opinion on the world or characters. Even still, Lüthi shows potential in his work. It's worth checking out if you are interested in fantasy.

Good Combat but long dialouge between characters

The book follows Yaro a soldier in the Bear Cavalry. The fight scenes were well written. For such a short book, I felt there was to much dialogue. The fight scenes were well done and I enjoyed them. I'd be interested in reading/listening to other books by the author if they were longer.

caught between

This was a fun short story about a regiment caught up by there duty to a king that doesn't deserve it. Betrayal, honor. duty are all explored from several characters and I really enjoyed it. Great narration. I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review

Great if you just want a battle story.

If you want a good battle story, this is the book for you. If you are looking for an adventure tale, this is not. The book lacks enough background, character development, and plot to be a full story, but would be great as part of a more complete tale. The reader also, while charming to listen to, has such a posh accent that in some places he loses the character of the tale and makes it less interesting than it could otherwise be. Needed more

I received this book for free at my request but the opinion is of my own. Very fast paced book I do feel though although you can read this without the series that having some knowledge would have been helpful in this case. Seemed a few times a bit rushed and that more detail of what was going on would have made it even better. Does peak my interest in the series though.

a Short albeit enjoyable romp

From the title, I expected this book to be a bit darker than it was. however it was a terrific short story with plenty of action, great sound effects and decent narration. my only qualm with the narration was that I thought he could have used a slightly gruffer voice. the black Hussars are a bad bunch!

Solid Military Fantasy Novella

This is a solid military fantasy novella about Yaro the commander of an elite unit of bear cavalry (!) sent on a seemingly simple mission to end a rebellion. Lüthi's eastern European themed world is well-developed and hints at deep lore. The story is well-paced with the battle scenes being a highlight for me. Miller's British-accented narration was perfect and chapters are divided with some suitably ominous music. I hope there will be more in this series.

A good listen for home or work..

A good story. I listen to audio books on my way home from work. The only issues I had with it were random points of faint music and sounds, so when the sound effects played I was checking my gauges to see if a issue popped up or strained to here where the noise was coming from. The reader speaks kind of soflty so I was continuously adjusting my volume up and down. Only disappointing thing was that when things get real interesting, is where the story stops.
