Resumen del Editor

Melvin Murphy is your average everyday teen...until he finds the System.

Melvin has normal problems. High school. Tests. Trying to find a girlfriend (and failing...miserably). But one day he awakens with access to a System that governs all magic.

In his attempt to summon a teacher to show him the ropes, he botches the ritual and accidentally summons a magic-wielding girl named Kalliphae. Sure, she's powerful and deadly. A femme fatale who's more intimidating than even the most popular girls at school.

But she's far from a teacher. She's the same age as him and clueless about Earth. Can you say perfect team?

Don't miss the start of this lighthearted and often hilarious LitRPG series about how two kids from different worlds grow into their own while surviving things like classes, bullies, vampires, and worse.

Memorable First Book

I can tell that I liked this book because I didn't automatically forget the character's names when it was over. It was an enjoyable start to a series. Looking forward to the next one. I'm generally not a fan of protagonists that are younger. They tend to make mistakes that I think an adult would not. Melvin made some mistakes, but in context of the situations, they make sense, with one exception. And yes, I'm talking about the wanting to see monsters part.
Predictability is low in this book. I really did not know what would happen next, but I was happy with where the story went.
Most LitRPG books start off in kind of dumb ways to establish the system the protagonist has to work through. Some make you wait a long time to get started. This story gets started pretty quickly and keeps it interesting. I'd say that the establishment of the system is better than most.
One thing that surprised me was when I was about 65% through the story and my 12-yr old daughter got in the car while I was listening in my car. She got hooked in 5 minutes. That was a first. So, I had to finish the story with her, since she didn't want to miss anything after that.
Going to keep this short and not ruin the story. It's a good time.

Something’s Not Right Here

Melvin was trying to follow the chain of command and report that he was being bullied. The teacher said he teaches and does not deal with student drama. So Melvin went to the counselor and he was told that he didn’t have any proof of the bully’s actions. Witnesses? No one was going to stand up to him. The principal was his last stop. But he ended up mouthing off, and asked him if he was doing his job protecting the students. The principal says he needs proof and the student has been a model student for four years. Melvin is new and has already gotten in trouble for talking back to his teachers.

Melvin loses his cool and says he was running away from Tim. The other time he was thrown in the trash can, the principal really doesn’t think he threw himself in there, does he? Melvin actually asks him “How stupid can you be?” He then was asked why he talked back to his teachers. He said, I can’t help it if you hire idiots. This all led him to be evaluated (again) and they said he is on the spectrum besides the already existing ADHD and Dyslexia. As he is sitting waiting for his mother to come pick him up just to afford the small apartment they had. The problem was that mom works two jobs, so as he waited he saw a floating yellow box just outside his view. When he focuses on it, it moves away.

Without moving my eye, I focused on it. He tried to latch on to it to get more information. It obeyed his mental command and it showed in his central vision now. Debuff: Grand Illusion - Block world magic, duration infinite. The receptionist thinks Melvin is acting crazy as he tries to engage the yellow icon. He then just tried willing it to go away. The menu said attempt to dispel debuff is successful and the yellow icon went away. Now when he looks at the receptionist, he can get certain information about her. He could see her name, her class, her affection and her level. When his mom picked him up, he checked her status. Then the next day, everyone was level 1. Why was that? When Melvin sees the librarian, he sees that she is level 2. How did she get to level 2? They talk and agree to share information as they learn about the system.

Please understand the main character is a teenager and this book is for YA. If you are okay with that, I think you will enjoy this book.

"Methinks she doth protest too much"

This was funny and I enjoyed it a lot. A bit of repetition of character stats, but that is a curse of the genre.

I was given this audiobook for free and have voluntarily left this review.

I was immediately sucked into the story ARC.

I just finished listening to this story and I was immediately sucked into the story ARC where it quickly became one of my top favorite reads.
Melvin, the MC, discovered that he had "Awakened" like a blindfold had just been ripped off, during the night. Where he Discovered a magical world. And the stats of "muggles" 😆 all sat at level 1, but as a newly Awakened individual he was at level 2. He found another level 2 at school, the Head Librarian and she quickly became his friend and confidant.
So grab this book to follow Melvin's exploits as the story unfolds around the him. Where Melvin found that he had to always think outside the box if he wanted to save himself, his friends, and family too. It's a good thing that he could think fast.
Grab the audiobook because Nathan Agin has a story to tell you!

young adult litrpg

it was pretty good for a young adult/teen litrpg. the story had a good flow and didn't make it feel like it was dragging.

starts out slow

The story started a little lackluster but gets better and better throughout. I would be interested in a second installment. The narration was good.

A book for the 15 year old protagonists

A lot of books with teenage protagonists forget that the hero is, in fact, a teenager. That they're awkward, under constant assault by hormones, and find stupid things that they know are stupid funny.

This book doesn't forget that. It's not quite a raunchy comedy, but there are the exact number of sex jokes I think are appropriate for a book starring two teenage virgins. They'll reference dicks then blush and change the subject before they can really land the joke. That sort of thing.

Whether you like that sort of thing is very much up to personal preference, so let's get to the more factual stuff. The magic system is reasonably unique, while still being a familiar System. I've seen better, I've seen worse. The biggest problem, I feel, is that we don't see the hard limits on the hero's powers. We know they're there; one of the first things he does is try to summon next week's lotto numbers and fail. So we know he's not omnipotent. We're also given good reasons why he can't just print up a million dollars for his mom. But beyond that, we don't get enough detail. Could he give himself the trait "Immune to Bullets"? Or "Immune to Monster Attacks"? Or "Really Lucky At Finding Money"? Some of these I can forgive because, again, he's 15. I had a few other ideas early on that I'm sure he wouldn't think of. But then sometimes he DOES pull out a genius idea at random, and it's not clear why he couldn't do this with a DIFFERENT genius idea earlier.

My biggest problem, however, is the double twist. SPOILERS, it's revealed that the guy hunting the hero is the father of the kid he saved early in the book. Good twist, connecting the two plot points, and it was previously established that the kid's parents were jerks. But then it's revealed that THAT guy was being mind-controlled by the mother of the hero's ally, who has never been hinted at to have a connection to either of them. And then a vampire pseudo-rapes the hero, but he manages to turn it around and sort of kill her. That scene would have been very powerful... in a couple books, when she's been built up as a threat and we know more about his powers. Right now? Eh.

Anyway, I got the sequel, but I'm not entirely sure I'll read whatever comes next. We'll see.

Oh, and the narrator is great, so no complaints there.
