Legendary musician Richard Marx offers an enlightening, entertaining look at his life and career.

Richard Marx is one of the most accomplished singer-songwriters in the history of popular music. His self-titled 1987 album went triple platinum and made him the first male solo artist (and second solo artist overall after Whitney Houston) to have four singles from their debut crack the top three on the Billboard Hot 100. His follow-up, 1989’s Repeat Offender, was an even bigger smash, going quadruple platinum and landing two singles at number one. He has written fourteen number one songs in total, shared a Song of the Year Grammy with Luther Vandross, and collaborated with a variety of artists including NSYNC, Josh Groban, Natalie Cole, and Keith Urban. Lately, he’s also become a Twitter celebrity thanks to his outspokenness on social issues and his ability to out-troll his trolls.

In Stories to Tell, Marx uses this same engaging, straight-talking style to look back on his life and career. He writes of how Kenny Rogers changed a single line of a song he’d written for him then asked for a 50% cut—which inspired Marx to write one of his biggest hits. He tells the uncanny story of how he wound up curled up on the couch of Olivia Newton-John, his childhood crush, watching Xanadu. He shares the tribulations of working with the all-female hair metal band Vixen and appearing in their video. Yet amid these entertaining celebrity encounters, Marx offers a more sobering assessment of the music business as he’s experienced it over four decades—the challenges of navigating greedy executives and grueling tour schedules, and the rewards of connecting with thousands of fans at sold-out shows that make all the drama worthwhile. He also provides an illuminating look at his songwriting process and talks honestly about how his personal life has inspired his work, including finding love with wife Daisy Fuentes and the mystery illness that recently struck him—and that doctors haven’t been able to solve.

Stories to Tell is a remarkably candid, wildly entertaining memoir about the art and business of music.

I loved hearing Richard Marx tell his story. His voice is wonderful to listen to. I enjoyed hearing about his experiences. How he would explain stories with just the right amount of information and conveyed them beautifully. A glimpse into how he writes his songs, how he wound up working with different people, and the way his life has unfolded. The only thing I did not enjoy was when it was over. I wanted to hear more. I also saw him and Rick Springfield play an acoustic show in October 2019 at the St. George Theater in Staten Island. It was awesome. I have always been a fan of Richard Marx and will continue to be.

It wasn't long enough!

Richard Marx makes it clear that he feels fortunate to have had so many amazing experiences in his life. But it's also clear that he has worked hard, and thus created how own luck to have such experiences. His story is a fun, interesting listen, and like any good book, I never wanted to "put it down" so I listened to it in just two sittings. I always prefer books narrated by the author, and Richard doesn't disappoint, he has an engaging speaking style just like when he tells stories during his concerts. This audiobook is well worth its price and I couldn't recommend it any higher. Thanks, Richard, for sharing your stories and for narrating it yourself!

I LOVED this book. So glad he read it for Audible. His voice was soothing to listen to and made it seem so personable!
I have always been a fan and I will always be a fan!!! It was nice to get a glimpse into his life.
I saw a concert in 1990 in Iowa and LOVED his energy, his call to excellence and the gifts God gave him in his music and lyrics❤️ A mutual friend in Nashville got a personal autographed pic to ME from him😃, I was so amazed “he wrote my name”. Even tho I have a loving husband and 2 kids, then and now, I still have my personal autographed pic hanging in “my” space, lol. Thank you for this book and sharing ur world with us❤️ well done👏👏👏❤️

Love or hate his music, Marx has had a prolific and long career as both a performer and a songwriter. In his memoir, he pulls no punches as he recalls his early days as a background singer, pitching a song to the late Kenny Rogers, his friendship with Luther Vandross, and working with Barbra. He is every bit as witty and engaging in long-form as he is on social media with just 280 characters.

"Stories to Tell" is every much about the struggle of being human as it is about being a successful songwriter for 30+ years. Highly recommended.

On Richard Marx for my teen years and beyond. Loved hearing his voice describing his tales of woe and all of his chance encounters that became touchstones to his career success as a performer, writer and producer. He seems to speak from the heart and is just the boy next door we always thought he was. Very impressed to learn about what he has done aside from his own recording career in the music business and humbled he could share some of his personal experiences. Love.

Been a fan of Mr Marx for many years. My first CD ever purchased was Repeat Offender!
I didn’t know how much he did behind the scenes like writing for other artist!
He is open and honest, but doesn’t go into his divorce or other personal dirt and it takes nothing away from his incredible story! It’s actually nice that no dirty laundry is shared!
Great story about a great life, that has me becoming a fan all over again! I’m truly Satisfied.

Great life
