Acerca de esta escucha

Sailing to Newfoundland documents a solo journey on a 40' sailboat from Florida to the remote and uninhabited fjords of the south coast of Newfoundland, one of the few places in the world where raw, unspoiled nature meets the ocean and provides sheltered anchorages. From the author of Becoming a Sailor, Journey to the Ragged Islands, and Chasing the Nomadic Dream, this book puts you in the cockpit, and in the fjords, and on top of glacier-cut mountains in the remote backcountry of Newfoundland.

I enjoyed this book, which could be appreciated on many levels. On the one hand, it is a guide to the stunning geography of the western half of Newfoundland's South Coast, as explored by sailboat. On the other hand, it is an interesting reflection of a solo sailor who shares almost every detail of his summer trip: what he eats, how he maintains his 41' sailboat, the weather he experiences, and even the geographic coordinates of his anchorages. You might say we are given a kind of audio reality show, in which an excellent sailor describes both his technique and even his breaks from sailing - for example, his hikes ashore, his fishing successes (and occasional failures), his editing of another sailor's book when internet is available, and the novels he reads when not preoccupied with other matters. This is not a comprehensive cruising guide to the province, but it would be a wonderful supplement for anyone who is considering sailing these waters - or that matter, sailing up the East Coast to get there. My only suggestion would be to have the reading done by a trained actor.
