Every word of this book is the truth! So many powerful declarative statements about teaching and learning. I will definitely be ordering a hard copy to highlight and annotate for next school year. Great book!!

Piss and Vinegar is Right!

It really came to life having Ken read this to "me" himself, I accredit the difference in my slow and steady reading of the book to hearing his passion and beliefs behind the words. The best part of the book is that nothing is unsubstantiated in research or buzz-wordy, flavor of the week style. If there is a conscientious effort made to go against the complacent grain and do whatever the hell it takes for students to succeed, they will. Nothing is wild or difficult but it feels personal, and that's because it is so damn personal.

Charismatic narrator

I love the passion of the author. I agree with and recognize my long term agreements with the conclusions the author makes. But I also found frustrations. Not frustrations with conclusions (though I can imagine that accusation coming) but frustrations with the lack of “how’s”. There are a lot of “you need to…” but very little “here is how…”

The author simultaneously says (in sum) that we need to ditch the excuses while also recognizing that teachers not having the resources and schedule to meet the demands are failures of the administration. But, if those are what is preventing me from doing things and I advocate for the changes, what am I supposed to do?

So I recognize the good in the book but I am left frustrated nevertheless.

This just validated the work the work of Ruthless educators who ensure high levels of learning for all.
