Resumen del Editor

Newly revised, this is the most up-to-date, practical guide ever published for women runners of every level.

Today, women make up more than half of the nation’s runners. And, as more and more women have hit the roads and trails and laced up for 5-Ks and marathons, the research showing the effects of running on the female body has grown significantly, too.

The truth is that even though the gap between men's and women's world best times is shrinking, the latest scientific evidence shows that running is a dramatically different experience for women than men - physically, mentally, and emotionally.

That's why it's time for an expert guide created especially for women runners. Introducing Runner's World Complete Book of Women's Running. Inside, it's chock-full of brand-new tips, the latest research, and contributions from more than 100 experts, addressing all of the special needs of women runners, including strategies to help you:

  • Train for any race, from a 5K to a marathon
  • Eat nutritiously and for maximum energy
  • Lose weight permanently
  • Deal with self-consciousness and body image
  • Run during pregnancy and through menopause
  • Choose the best clothes and accessories
  • Run anywhere safely
  • Prevent and treat injuries, especially those that women are most likely to encounter

With clear photographs, running sidebars, and testimonials from women runners of all ages and abilities, this comprehensive resource provides the most current practical advice available anywhere for women runners of all levels.

Nothing to write home about

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Absolutely not. Nothing in this book is particularly specific to women. It's more designed for someone who knows NOTHING about running. Literally, nothing.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

I couldn't make it that far. The narrator has an extremely annoying voice. She clips and speaks at an usual pace. Even adjusting the speed didn't help.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Gwen Hughes?

Anyone. Seriously.

Could you see Runner's World Complete Book of Women's Running being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

Not unless Hollywood sought to lose an vast amount of money in a vert short time.

Any additional comments?

There are far better books on running out there.

Outdated, Patronizing, and Slow. I returned it.

I had to return this after listening to just the first hour. If you're looking for a book on running that discusses soft shoes that control the movement of your feet, gizmos like GPS units where you can see a map of your run on a website (oooh!), clunky fitness watches, and Nike+ insoles that work with your iPod (all ancient technologies by now), then here's the book for you. A history lesson about running. Useless, for those who do know that the information is many years out of date, and just plain bad and misinforming for anyone who doesn't realize that.

The tone of the writing is patronizing, along the lines of "don't be afraid of technology, ladies!" and be sure you take your fitness watch to a jeweler to have the battery changed, so you don't break it. *rolling eyes* The narrator makes is just painful to listen to. Excellent enunciation, very understandable, but it's read as though we are all a little slow and need everything said very, very clearly, and with little expression.

My bad for not checking the date and reviews (some from 2010!), and for not listening to the sample. I trusted that because it was from Runner's World it would be worthwhile. Ha. I don't trust them any more! They really should discontinue this book.
