He was just a gamer . . . until reality became the ultimate level grind.
Qing Baker thought he had problems. A dead-end job, mounting bills, and a sick younger sister. Then he wakes up in a world where magic is real, monsters are hungry, and the only way home is to level up.
Thrust into Elrydisan, a realm of swords and sorcery, Qing must quickly adapt to his new reality. No tutorials. No respawns. Every fight is a struggle for survival, and death is a one-way ticket to becoming the enemy.
Armed with a rusty axe and a rapidly growing arsenal of magical abilities, Qing faces down hordes of undead, demonic beasts, and treacherous humans. But Qing isn't alone! Joined in his adventures by a grizzled veteran and a fiery young warrior, he forges unlikely alliances, confronts his deepest fears, and discovers a strength he never knew he possessed.
But as the darkness closes in, threatening to consume not only Elrydisan but his own world, Qing must make a choice:
Embrace his destiny as a hero, or watch everything he loves be destroyed.

everything really picks up around 40% through and I think it's worth it if you stick with it. there's enough there that I want to find out what happens next
requires some patience for a new author/series

Underrated

The audio volume was up and down. Too soft for the quiet parts so you turn up the volume, then way too loud for the loud parts. Even when staying at the same volume, the loud parts were too loud. When words had a P, the narrator often popped them. It wasn’t all the time, but often enough to be noticed.
Volume inconsistencies, Popping P’s

I honestly hope to see more from the author in the future but at this time he could use some experience in my opinion.
the narrator was great, good voices, set the tone well and made the best of a basic title.
DNF about 5 hours in

MC was very whiney

My issue with the book is that it feels like an incredibly slow burn. That is in part due to the fact that this isn't some sociopath that keeps his cool after immediately finding himself in a new world in a dangerous situation right from the get go. He doesn't immediately start trying to power level and get strong. He's trying to come to grips with the situation he finds himself in and that's good, it's different from a lot of the other books I've listened to. However this does mean there is a lot of whining to get through and it takes him a long time to just find the courage to fight. I enjoy the fresh perspective, but I do wish it was toned down a bit. He's also written as if he's in his 20s but acts like he's 15, and while I understand why, it's not entirely pleasant.
My issue with the author is that there are minor consistency mistakes that come up. The best example I can probably put here without spoiling anything is that he sometimes refers to a pair of sandals as boots. These thankfully don't happen a lot but when they do it's close together with each other. He's also writing some dialogue that feels a bit forced in order to make references so that way jokes land cleaner. However instead of being funny it ends up being fairly cringe worthy. There is also dialogue between the MC and another character that seems to come out of left field in order to force a romantic connection and while I understand why the connection is needed for the narrative, it does not land as being natural to me.
With this said, I will finish it, partly because I didn't get this for free or with credits and partly because I've been waiting for this book ever since I heard about it on TikTok. Also I think all the hype for this on TikTok ended up doing this book a disservice and made it seem better than what it might end up being by the end of it but who knows. Either way, I paid for it, I'm going to finish it. I might not look into the rest of the series though unfortunately.
A good story just poorly done.
