Asa
For eight years, I've lived in the shadow of my golden child stepbrother. Dex is everything our parents want in a son, and I'm the weirdo who can't seem to get his life together.
After getting renovicted from my apartment, I'm forced to ask Dex for help. He agrees to let me stay with him while I find a new place, but neither of us is happy about it. Then I accidentally discover that my perfect stepbrother has an online side gig, and I learn how lucrative it can be.
Working together is supposed to be a way to make some extra cash, but it's impossible to keep things in the business zone when I start to realize that maybe Dex is just as misunderstood and lonely as me.
Dex
The only downside to moving home after college is that I can't avoid my stepbrother anymore. Asa is one of the most aggravating people I've ever met, and he's spent the last eight years letting me know exactly what he thinks of me.
After agreeing to let him stay with me so he doesn't end up homeless, he accidentally finds out about my online job. No one else knows my secret, but instead of using it against me, he suggests we work together as a solution to his money problems and my desire to get him out of my apartment as quickly as possible.
I already know this is going to be messy, but I'm not prepared for how difficult it is to keep our arrangement impersonal. And the more I learn about my closed-off stepbrother, the more I realize that maybe we aren't so different after all.
Asa and Dex's story is an opposites-attract stepbrother romance between a jock and a nerd who can't keep things in the business zone. You can expect dislike to friends to lovers, hurt/comfort, found family, online spicy times, reluctant roommates, some snark, lots of heat, and all the feels as these two men realize that sometimes the person you need is someone you shouldn't want. It is book four in the Legacy Mechanics series, but can be enjoyed as a standalone.

Very enjoyable

Anyway, good job on the author's part for delving into various types of abuse, particularly in areas where it might not be readily apparent such as in the cases of children and their wicked parents! It was great that specific instances were pointed out, so hopefully that helps anyone reading this to figure out if they are being abused in more un-obvious ways, other than physically.
Also liked that the reasons for siblings "hating" each other was delved into. I forget which philosopher (? or whomever) said the following quote, but here goes:
"There's a very thin line between the emotions of love & hate..."
Which became very apparent here, once the reader gets into the meat of the storyline (no pun intended).
Bottom line is I really liked both characters in here and even though it gets a bit trope-y at times, I was hooked into their storyline and wanting to find out what happens next!
Things that I appreciated:
1). In both characters, the willingness to be called out on mistaken assumptions, which often took awhile amid some frowny bitch faces, yelling, etc...you know, the usual symptoms of a temper meltdown, but after that, the ability to listen to what the other person was actually saying and consider a different POV of certain situations other than their own, which was sometimes tainted by the opinions of others.
2). the ability to be open to a different type of a relationship than either had previously experienced.
3). being the other person's "wing-man", not in the usual circumstances of casual bar/party hookups, but in being their backup person, their emotional, and physical support to help care for each other when things got intense and confrontational, especially with their respective parents when everything "went-to-hell-in-a-handbasket"!
I thought the plot was interesting, varying between them staeting out thinking they hated each other but then gradually coming to understand each other on much deeper levels and to appreciate each other in unexpected ways, including their side gigs, their sense of humor, and their willingness to be open to new ideas, new experiences.
Oh, and those sexual situations between them? So smokin' hot it felt like a volcano was erupting up through the floor of their apartment! (wow!)
I appreciated the way the author took the time to go into what each of them was feeling and thinking, before, during, and after the sexual situations, and how fine-tuned into each other they each were; those first kisses between them were epic! It all was, truth be told!
(major yum!)
(sigh)...
Now I feel compelled to go read the other books in the series because I'm curious about their friend's storylines.
(not really sighing because of wanting to read more, lol, but because I may have missed some storyline components.)
I do have a habit of seeking out the first book to read in a series based on 1). premise 2). cover (yeah, yeah, shallow POV, maybe? but that crucial first look at a book's cover is what often makes or breaks a sale (spoken from the POV of a artist, plus a prolific reader).
Honestly? Some of the covers I've seen on books in the past few years, especially those independently published, I wouldn't give a second glance to. Maybe I'm missing out on a good storyline but (imo) if the author doesn't give a rat's ass about the quality of their covers, then I don't want to waste my time or money on their book, because I believe that the cover reflects on the creative qualities of an author, so logically it follows that the book is also sub-par if the cover skews that way.
(rant over)
And this book?
Two thumbs up! 👍👍
