Very well-written!!!

I recently discovered Carian Cole. Out of the 300+ books in my audible library, this is the very first review I’ve written, I love a good love story, but I was on the fence because of the mixed reviews. I saw that people either loved or hated it. I can easily decipher those two categories to be those who understand mental illness and addiction, and those who do not. If you believe that addiction is a choice and mental illness is an excuse for people to behave poorly, then you’re not educated on the topic and thus, you won’t root for Evan and you’ll think Piper is a doormat. However, if you know that addiction is a disease recognized by the medical community, and that mental illness is a brain disease that effects behavior because of the chemical imbalance in part of the brain the controls habit, impulse control, judgement and decision making, then you will absolutely love this story!! This is the 5th Carian Cole book and she is quickly becoming a favorite author of mine.

The reason I’m choosing to write a review for this book is because I could 100% relate with the male mc. I have struggled with mental illness and substance abuse my entire adult life. I have 4 diagnosed mental illnesses and am on 8 medications so that I can do my best to live a normal life. However, the road to get to the healthy place I am in now was long, heartbreaking and I caused a lot of damage in my wake. Always regretting and always unintentionally caused pain. But those that love me, they know my heart, they know I’m a very kind and loving person and always have good intentions… my loved ones know I don’t understand why I did the things I did. I’ll be on medication the rest of my life. And so will Evan. Everything written about him and this story is an accurate portrayal of what it is like to live with mental illness in a world where the majority thinks we’re just bad people. Piper was an amazing example of what it takes to love a mentally ill addict. I didn’t see her as a doormat at all. I saw someone who looked past the surface level of Evans behavior. Yes, she was very naive at times, almost to a fault, but it was clear it was because she never wanted to give up on him.

The book is long, but I never felt that it lagged or anything. I would highly recommend this book to anyone that understands the mentioned subjects or that wants to understand them.

The love story in itself is a roller coaster! But I absolutely loved every minute of it.

Oof... It was a doozy.

Piper is a young adult who has decided to join the work force instead of going to college. She goes to a nearby park every day to read during her lunch break, where she encounters Blu, a homeless musician who plays guitar and sings. They begin to look forward to seeing each other every day & eventually, they strike up a friendship, which leads to a romantic entanglement. He's flighty, and unpredictable, and Piper attempts to love him where he's at. Their relationship progresses, however, when she finally gets her own place, hoping to share it with him, he leaves his dog with her (who does that?) and disappears without a trace. Fast forward, he joins a band, and they hit it big. They reconnect during one of his performances, and this starts off a decade of them being ships that pass in the night, never connecting. Blu continues to struggle with mental health and dependency issues, which prevent him from being able to commit to Piper, who ends up pregnant. While I wouldn't change ANYTHING about this beautiful story, I did knock a star off, because it takes Blu an entire lifetime to get his act together, leaving a little girl to be raised without her father.

well written and well read. this book is about toxic relationships and the toll of loving someone who is not good for you, codependency, self sabotage, addiction and mental health issues. thankfully it does have a hea, enjoy.
