The Demon Lord is dead.

The System is broken.

Somehow, Elias Hearthsong is neither of these things, despite being at the final battle of the Demon Wars. He is a Master Enchanter, perhaps the last one alive. Determined to keep a promise, he crosses the continent to protect his dead friend's legacy: a crumbling orphanage run by a beautiful kitsune.

He isn't a teacher, nor does he have experience with children. But with the love of a few good women, anything can become possible.

Right up front before you read any further just know that I recommend this book to anybody thinking about giving it a shot. A little context for my review. I tend to take it easy on the first and last book of any series as not every series makes it to “The End” and the first of anything can be a shaky endeavor. I also try to make clear the distinction between the quality of the writing/performance of the author/narrator and my personal tastes should they differ. The story seems to be taking place in a world where there is a game-like system complete with levels. A massive war has just concluded between the fantasy races and the demons. The war was so devastating that it leveled everything and killed almost everyone before the good guys won. Our main character is at the end of his journey to what will become his new home. That new home is an orphanage that used to be run by his master, mentor, friend? There's at least one lovely lady running the orphanage when he arrives although she looks disheveled and in need of assistance. Of course, there is another issue that appears early on in the book. With all the real men away fighting the war it has allowed bottom feeders to take control in certain areas and despite, in this world, slavery being against the law it has reared its ugly head and an orphanage is an easy target for thugs. Fear not for our main character is a Master Class Enchanter! I very much enjoyed the story and the performances by the narration team. Jessica Threet is one of my all-time favorite narrators and I absolutely loved her performances in “Paladin of The Sigil.” Evan Jordan is relatively new to me, but I enjoyed his performance in “I'm Just a Small Town Shifter.” They absolutely positively did not disappoint here in this book either. This book was a joint venture between Annabelle Hawthorne and Virgil Knightley. I'm familiar with Virgil’s previous works and if I was going to recommend another series of his for you all to check out, it would be “Monster Masseur.” As an author he appears to be very upfront and unapologetic about the type of stories he writes. Those stories tend to be close to a 60/40 split with a heavy emphasis on the “spice.” This is the first time that I've come across anything from Annabelle and it appears to me that she is a relatively new author. Out of the stories available on Amazon, the one that caught my attention for my next read is titled “The Last of Her Kind.” In her bio on Amazon she's got a web page listed where you can also find a link for her Patreon and on her Patreon she's got the standard fare such as artwork, polls, chapters of her work, etc. Also, for this book if you have kindle unlimited then I would say just you grab the eBook if only to check out the artwork that is available there. Lastly, I'll just say well done to everybody who had a hand in bringing this story to us, the Audible listeners.

Loved it.
Loved the characters, loved the magic and skills system. The writing was very good. Comfortable and relaxed. I can't say I didn't like anything about this book. Like not even one. Which is unusual for me.
As for the two narrators..........
Perfect. Absolutely perfect.
Virgil has such a nice voice and reads so realistic. He doesn't sound like an ai/robot voice. He sounds like an actual person speaking with inflections and tones in places that make sense.
Jessica sounds so sweet and I love her characters' voices. She also seems to know exactly where tone and inflection and pauses in text should go. So many people don't seem to have that talent.
I am currently impatiently awaiting book two and I will be looking for more books written and narrated by any combination of these four brilliant people.
Keep up the good work.

Perfect slice of life

I found this title upon a whim while pre-ordering another book. This book NEEDS a series of fallowing titles. For the shadow this book has casted will need support to sustain its casting.
The love that the MC of this story is from this story and isn't stolen from earth like many other harem styled stories.
The voice acting is spot on. They don't lead on that they are only reading the lines. They breath life into the characters they voice👍👍
