He’s not the hero they deserve, but he’s the hero they’ve got.

No, seriously. Talon wants to know what he did to deserve this. What would make a sentient rock decide that he of all people should be the one to save the world from zombies? That’s right. Zombies. Because apparently a higher power decided that teaching magic to teenagers wasn’t enough of a challenge.

With a ridiculously attractive healer (who may or may not hate him), his sister (who he miiiight have a forbidden telepathic link with), a sentient god-like rock (that can only communicate via yes/no vibes), a disdainful dragon, and a rude matchmaking horse by his side, he just might be able to save the world.

Or die trying.

A fun, homosexual adventure. Main character (narrator) is a sassy gay (bisexual iirc) mage. Can be a bit "talky" but the voice performance makes it more palatable.

traditional adventure with untraditional characters.

Quite good. Fun characters.

I was looking for a cozy fantasy to listen to while working and this had me gasping out loud, laughing, and wiping tears from my face. I wasn’t quite ready to leave the world behind.

Surprising find

The story grabs you from the beginning and keeps you cau f ht up till you finish the story. Love the MCs and the narration is top notch. a grwat narrator gives you all the different voices and personalities till you transpirted into the story.

Another great MMC! And a story you cant stop listening to!

Listen. I LOVE a sassy AF main character especially when they consistently get themselves in hairy situations. He is sassy, self-deprecating, a touch pessimistic, has a huge ego, avoids his personal problems so well that denial is his state of being, and totally snobby about his personal comforts. All this to say, if you love character development and adore banter, this one is for you!

This is a fantasy novel with a “find the cheerleader save the world” plot. We experience magical humans: healers, mages, and dragon riders. Oh yeah. There are dragons for all of you who love it. I would say romance was very much a side quest if that isn’t your thing - aka you are here for the story only! Just a little sprinkle of love if you will. Sorry nothing spicy here mostly mild mentions of steam and closed door intimacy. The main focus is the journey and stopping evil. The way the relationship played out really reminds me of The House in the Cerulean Sea. Super cute but the story and characters are what makes you stay.

Louisa masterfully (see what I did there 😂) creates a world that is easily followed and eloquently executed the perfect side characters and love interest. The side characters bring in what our main character lacks and while they all are vastly different, they learn from each other too. Our love interest is, of course, a super hot older gentleman with a famous healing touch. With a name like “plague-slayer” what’s not to love?

To have Michael Lesley narrate all of Louisa’s characters was truly a treat. Sometimes in transition to one character to another there was a little overlap in the way they sounded to where I had to think a bit about who was speaking but that was mostly minor. Otherwise, I would say pretty much everyone was very distinct. I was impressed considering the large volume of people we come into contact with as we traverse all across this world.

I laughed a lot reading this, gasped, cried, got choked up, and became very fond of the characters in this story. It just goes to show that where you come from, what trauma you may have, what knowledge, personality, behaviors, or talents you may lack personally, don’t matter in making a difference, especially, when you are willing to listen to, rely on, and work together with others. Thank you for this one. I haven’t written a review in a very long time and this was worth the essay! 🫶🏼

Louisa Masters and Michael Lesley are the dynamic duo!

Talon is a mage, and is tasked with a quest to find the champion of the ‘Stone of Creation’ to save the people from zombies, with the help of his twin Tia a dragon rider and Healer Jaimin, they collect others for their quest. As they try to work out how to find the champion, tragedy occurs and one of them dies. All isn’t lost and they do figure it all out.

I laughed and snickered over the characters.
I really loved this book, even though it made me ugly cry.

The audio is just as awesome as the ebook, I loved every second of listening to it.

Keep your tissues close.
