Don't let the title fool you. This isn't a book about high fiving everyone else in your life. You're already doing that. Cheering for your favorite teams. Celebrating your friends. Supporting the people you love as they go after what they want in life. Imagine if you gave that same love and encouragement to yourself. Or even better, you made it a daily habit. You'd be unstoppable. In this book, Mel teaches you how to start high fiving the most important person in your life, the one who is staring back at you in the mirror: YOURSELF.

Shetty grew up in a family where you could become one of three things—a doctor, a lawyer, or a failure. His family was convinced he had chosen option three: Instead of attending his college graduation ceremony, he headed to India to become a monk, to meditate every day for four to eight hours, and devote his life to helping others. After three years, one of his teachers told him that he would have more impact on the world if he left the monk’s path to share his experience and wisdom with others.

A few years ago, Kris Carr’s world was falling apart. Her father was dying, she had to pivot her business because of the pandemic, and she was on the verge of reaching her twenty-year milestone of living with an incurable Stage IV cancer diagnosis. While sitting in a CVS parking lot, she broke down, finally allowing herself to feel the massive stress and sadness she had been suppressing in order to seem strong for those around her, and for herself. And then she asked herself, “If embracing my intense emotions helped me feel even the slightest bit better, why was I so determined to avoid them?"

Comparisonitis is a contagious, socially transmitted condition that occurs when you compare yourself to others so frequently and fiercely that you're left paralysed, with your confidence in tatters and your self-worth plummeting. It may sound trivial, but this affliction can have serious adverse effects on our mental health, leading to depression, anxiety, overthinking and regret. To make matters worse, our comparison culture is only expanding. Thanks to social media, we have more opportunities to compare ourselves than ever before, and even kids are falling into the trap.

What does it mean to be an adult? In the 20th century, psychologists came up with five markers of adulthood: finish your education, get a job, leave home, marry, and have children. Since then, every generation has been held to those same markers. Yet so much has changed about the world and living in it since that sequence was formulated. All of those markers are choices, and they’re all valid, but any one person’s choices along those lines do not make them more or less an adult.

Resumen del Editor
What if the worst thing that ever happened to you turned out the best thing that ever happened?
You really can Get the Funk Out! When you belly flop into another one of life's funks, learn what to do next!
"Finally, a common sense approach to an all too common malady. Ms. Bernstein has assembled the tools to overcome our personal demons in words that are clear and concise. When I find a good book, I usually ‘can’t put it down’ but Get the Funk Out! demands time to absorb the inspirational stories and ponder the question of how faith can be so strong." (Gary Pihl, former guitarist for Sammy Hagar and current member of the band Boston)
"I love this book! A radically transparent look that teaches us to face life's hard knocks - instead of running away - and heal from the gifts that emerge from them. This is a bedside keeper to remind you that grass grows through concrete." (Bryan E. Robinson, PhD, psychotherapist and author of #Chill: Turn Off Your Job and Turn On Your Life)
"The power of self-esteem is on full display in Get the Funk Out!. Janeane Bernstein pulls together an unlikely cast to write a prescription for dealing with life’s large and small challenges. Finding joy on the journey is possible, no matter how rocky the road." (Richard M. Cohen, author of Blindsided and Strong at the Broken Places)

Dondi Dahlin shows us that we are all born with individual rhythms that go beyond the influence of our genes and upbringing. The five elements originated in ancient Chinese medicine over 2,000 years ago - when scholars theorized that the universe is composed of five forces: water, wood, fire, earth, and metal. Understanding these elements helps us stay in balance physically, mentally, spiritually, and emotionally.

Incredibly inspiring and useful information how to get the Funk out!
I’m so glad I was referred to this incredibly inspiring book read by the warm and wonderful author Janeane Bernstein.
Her insights and acknowledgment of how we all get into funk sometimes and the different ways that they happen is filled with humor and vulnerability and deeply honest.
Through her guests on her podcast at the same name and her own experiences she shares stories that uplift and also give really practical ways to deal with our challenges with compassion humor and kindness.
Can’t recommend it enough for anyone who’s going through a challenge or knows someone who could use it!
