These rivals are stuck with each other…

Retired hockey player Caleb Colburn needs this new construction project to go smoothly to prove he’s earned his place in the family business. There’s only one problem. The architect liaison assigned to the project is Emma Sumner. As in, the woman who made his life a living hell in college. Now, she’s back in town and already breathing down his neck on the job. Worse? She’s only gotten more beautiful.

Emma’s in love with the beautiful historic building they’re renovating. But her feelings toward project manager Caleb definitely lean more toward hate. Not only is the man making her job harder than it needs to be, he’s the one who took everything from her when she was at her most desperate. Not that she’d ever admit it out loud, but she’s never recovered.

Neither is willing to forgive and forget. But forced proximity and surprising common ground have these enemies starting to wonder just how fine the line between love and hate is. A burning mutual attraction adds complications for them both. Will anything be left standing when their secrets are finally revealed?

Good narration

Caleb Colburn never wanted to play professional hockey - but he didn't expect an injury to take him out of the game while he was still in college either. He always had an eye for Emma when they were in college but he had no idea why she seems to dislike him so.

Emma Sumner is working as an architect for a large local firm. The temp job is the only thing that's gone her way in what seems like, well, forever. She's surprised and not pleased to find out that her college nemesis (from her POV) Caleb is one of the bosses on the project she's involved in. But for Emma, her life depends on her doing this job extremely well.

It's not classic 2nd chance. There's a hint of a mystery that I'm sure will be resolved in Tucker and Hazel's story. We see such a sweet side of Bill, and Caleb finally comes to a realization about Hank that's poignant.

Sweet Scale: 4/5

A romance that feels like a soft landing and a free fall all at once
Free Falling is one of those Jill Shalvis gems that sneaks up on your heart—quietly at first, then all at once, until you realize you’ve fallen head over heels for these characters, their chemistry, and the tender, hopeful world she builds around them.
This story is pure comfort. It’s the kind of romance that wraps around you like a warm hoodie after a long day—full of humor, vulnerability, and that signature Shalvis charm that makes every emotional beat feel earned. The characters are beautifully human: a little messy, a little guarded, and so deeply deserving of the love they find in each other. Their banter sparkles, their connection sizzles, and their growth feels honest in a way that lingers long after the last page.
What I loved most is how the author balances swoon-worthy romance with genuine heart. She gives us moments of levity, moments of longing, and moments that make you pause because they’re just so true. It’s a story about trust, second chances, and the courage it takes to leap—even when you’re terrified of the fall.
If you’re craving a romance that’s warm, witty, and emotionally satisfying, Free Falling delivers in every way. It’s the kind of book that reminds you why you love love stories in the first place.
The narration is superb, and brings the story to life in the most spectacular way!
A perfect, glowing 5 stars.
