Read by the author.

Dietitian and nutrition therapist Leslie Schilling turns diet culture on its head with a radical new message: We aren't designed to diet.

Diet culture is a system of oppression that values only certain types of bodies and equates thinness with health. It permeates American society and even lurks in our safest spaces, such as schools, medical offices, and places of worship. But when you begin to see its lies for what they are, you can fight back, build resilience and self-esteem, and trust your divine design.

Leslie Schilling has counseled hundreds of people every year who struggle with food, body image, chronic dieting, and disordered eating. She helps them understand diet-culture myths, fight the lies we've been told (and sold), and discover the truth about health, well-being, and how God sees our bodies—all bodies—as good.

In Feed Yourself, you'll learn how to:

  • Identify the lies of diet culture.
  • Understand that health is far more than what we eat or how we move.
  • Escape the shame and guilt you may feel about your body.
  • Trust your body and recognize its cues and needs.
  • Find freedom in food and learn to define health on your own terms.

Discussion questions, charts to help you discern diet culture, and recommended readings are included in the audiobook companion PDF download.

Such a good & important read! Read by the author (which is usually a good thing) and in this case, I think she did a great job reading it. This book is well-organized and thoroughly explained. The author was very compassionate and understanding, guiding the reader by answering common questions/contradictions when it comes to diet culture. I'm not religious at all, and I found that Leslie's use of the Bible and references to the church and Christianity served as a good example of how diet culture can show up in any of our safe spaces, whether that's in the doctor's office, at home, a religious institution, or other places that we should be able to feel accepted and welcomed. As a dietitian, I work with people from all religious backgrounds, and Leslie's description of the misinterpretation of the Bible (especially gluttony) opened my eyes to even more insidious ways that my clients may feel pressure to lose weight, diet, restrict, etc.

Helpful for non religious people too

Spot on and so needed to be written. This book addresses so many hurtful and misleading statements from classic diet culture and will help anyone struggling with the shame that they may feel or have felt about their bodies and eating habits. Well done, Leslie! And thank you! I plan to share this book with a few people in my life. I appreciated the honesty and empathy and encouragement.

Incredibly Wisely Presented

The struggle is between good and evil and this book makes that clear. What a beautiful testimony for each of us as Americans in diet culture. We do not have to constantly become less to be worthy of love and respect. Wonderfully presented book.

Life changing

Schilling's approach not only addresses the physical aspect of nourishment but also delves into the emotional and spiritual dimensions of our relationship with food.

What sets this book apart is its unique integration of community support and spirituality. Schilling beautifully weaves in the importance of finding solace and guidance by incorporating scripture and themes of love. "Feed Yourself" provides a holistic perspective on nurturing one's body and soul.

Content was highly applicable, understandable and relevant. I recommend it to anyone who thinks diets are good/work and/or those with disordered eating or eating disorders.

I appreciate that this book was written by a Christian and encourages listeners to turn from the lies of diet culture and embrace the person God made each of us to be. However, the author uses a lot of social justice buzzwords that cause me to wonder whether or not I can trust what she is saying. Justice is biblical but God’s justice and our culture’s social justice narrative are not the same. I had to listen a little bit at a time so that I could hear the good things the author was saying without becoming frustrated with the social justice narrative.

Listen with caution

This book exposes the lies of diet culture while pointing to the grace, hope and truth of the gospel. I can’t recommend it enough to anyone who has struggled with disordered eating, dieting or poor body image.

A Truth Bomb

I don’t know for sure how to think about this topic and was listening to this book hoping to have good insight from someone who understood it better.

However the grossly irresponsible way she takes Bible verses out of context, ignores the surrounding verses that help clarify the authors original meaning and uses them to try to make a point that the verse actually isn’t talking about at all is irresponsible and destructive. I’ve seen this done in personal relationships and church much during my life and the result is always abuse, confusion and pain. Handling scripture like this is dangerous.
An introductory class in hermeneutics for the author would be a good place to start.

I actually don’t know that much about nutrition and at first was thinking she was providing good insight and thoughts but as she continued to handle scripture in such a dishonest and irresponsible way it made me think she probably approaches other topics that way as well. If she feels such freedom to twist the words of God the almighty creator, she can’t be very careful with the other information she is unpacking.
I should probably look to learn from someone who keeps Scripture and research in context, properly represents the original mean and doesn’t twist things to prove her point.

Irresponsable misuse of Scripture

The writer uses all the buzz words the world uses. I really wanted to like this book, but it made me cringe.
