A Good Horror / Thriller Story With Quick Pacing

I really enjoyed the audiobook for "Escape!", which I listened to during my work commute over a week. The premise is that seven co-workers head out for a weekend escape room team-building adventure, which is supposed to last only 90 minutes. Among the seven is Cheryl, the main character and newbie of the group, having only worked at the company for a few months.

The story moves along at a slow pace until the seven find themselves trapped in an underground escape room they are forced to solve. Oh yeah, it's all put together by someone hell bent on revenge against the more established employees, with Cheryl caught in the middle. As the story progresses, there are tests presented, giving members of the group a chance to atone, with deadly consequences should they not.

I really enjoyed the story and thought it moved along at a steady pace once it reached the horror aspect of the story. You can't really blame it for starting slowly because the progression from casual-team-building-weekend to fight-for-their-lives is necessary. It's all wrapped up with a neat bow at the end. I wasn't particularly happy with how it ended, but that's fine, I don't have to be happy. It just has to make sense, and it does. Kudos to Iain Rob Wright for a well-crafted story.

I had not listened to anything narrated by Aubrey Parsons before, so I didn't know what to expect. My only negative with his narration is that female voices were a little pitchy, which, when combined with a British accent, reminded me of female characters from Monty Python skits and movies. It did pull me out of the story at times, not because of a comical aspect, but because of the voice itself. Otherwise, I thought Parsons did a great job with varying the male voices, and his prose narration was solid and emotive.

Give this book a listen. You'll be glad you did.

A wild, fast paced ride reminiscent of Saw...

Escape! by Iain Rob Wright was such a fun listen and it really moved along at a great pace. On a work retreat, a group of people get trapped in an escape room type setting in a remote area. Only this is no ordinary escape room and this particular group has a few secrets that they're hiding...I don't want to reveal any spoilers, but it's a good listen. There's violence, language, suspense, twists...everything you're likely expecting already. Although I guessed what the big twist was prior to it being revealed, I think it was just luck. I could easily see this being made into a movie, as the plot was well thought out and the story holds your interest quite well.

Aubrey Parsons did a really great job narrating Escape! He had unique voices for the characters and I could easily tell which person was talking at any given moment with the unique voices that his narration lent to the cast. I'd definitely listen and actively look for more narrations by Mr. Parsons. I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher for an honest review.

Loved this one!

I absolutely loved this one! How it all came together, the narrators voice, and the overall arching story line. This might have to be a must own for me. Can’t wait to see what comes next in the series!

It's Saw.

Considering the premise and plot are a Saw movie script or novelization, I'm very impressed I enjoyed it as much as I did. A big part of that is the narration of course, but the characters are extremely engaging as well. It did get a bit predictable (yet still sort of ridiculous at the same time) at points, and the hilarious [plot element I don't want to ruin, but basically the 'how'] made it impossible to take seriously. Now that I think about it, just masking the glaring deficits in the plot is a real accomplishment and while it has little substance, is a testament to the author's style! As long as you're down with SAW, it's worth a listen

Great listen

Short book but definitely worth the money. Fast paced and very entertaining. Narrator did a great job.

ESCAPE

Great book started a little slow but you needed to get the context before you hhotvvinto the meat of the story. i enjoyed itvenough to finidh it in one day. was read very well too.

! This This book had me right from the start and held me captive til the end! I love Mr. Wright’s books and this one did not disappoint. What made it even better was the wonderful narration by Aubrey Parsons. If you love a good edge of the seat, keep you guessing book then this is a must read!

Escape!

This is far from my usual genre of books that I normally listen to but it sounded interesting so I decided to give it a try. This book was definitely interesting and a little bizarre and was full of danger, suspense and murder. It had me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. I received this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this unbiased review.

Awesome book.

I didn't have high hopes because of negative reviews I read. I'm glad I ignored those reviews. I normally listen to sci-fi and sprinkle in a bit of horror and fantasy. I'll be checking out more of Iain's books in the future. Narration was excellent. Aubrey has no problem with distinguishing various characters from each other, throws in a variety of accents, dialects, as well as having a good tone to help the listener feel the various scenarios.

Wow! I chose this book to listen to in a hurry. I could tell by the reviews, stars and description that this wouldn’t be a boring listen. I was more than right when I made this choice!

The narrator was perfect for the book, too. He was able not only to create a variety of different voices, but his rendering of the changes different emotions made on them was also superb.

This is a gripping book of what I guess could be called ‘natural’ horror - no beasties or spirits involved. Just normal, every day people who gave into their baser natures and suffered consequences for their actions.

It’s a tale of what you might call revenge, although one can see the justice involved as well. It’s very well crafted, and even though I made several guesses about what might occur, not all of them were correct. However, there were subtle clues (or maybe not subtle to the reader, but only to the characters) which gave some of my theories substance.

This is truly a thriller. I could even imagine Hitchcock making a film of it.

It’s that good. Give it a try!
