The narration was terrible. The book was great. Clowns have always freaked me out, so killer clowns was perfect.

I don’t know man

I don’t know man, thought this was gonna be better. Narration was good, plenty of gore and violence but it just seemed a bit generic… like ho hum.

the gore, the pace, the terror. It was exceptional. A love letter to films like Texas chainsaw massacre and the strangers for sure. what keeps me from potentially recommending is both the narration (the clowns were sensational but everything else, even just general prose was so stilted) & the sometimes sexual nature of the violence. It often felt like the author often pointed sexual violence exclusively at women and — while common in extreme horror — say with me the wrong way :/

Cool Concept

I loved the mindless horror aspect of this book. The author explains in the afterword that this was a slasher novel and it really was. However, the narrator….has opportunities. He was robotic. Almost to the point where I thought the book was being read by AI.

I don't understand

I'm really confused. I never knew I had a fear of clowns. I don't know how many diamonds I could have made while listening to this book, my butt was clenched so tight and I was on edge throughout it all. Bravo!!

Gross but in a good way.

Wow! I haven’t read or listened to many “gruesome” stories but I’d have to say this one takes the cake. I couldn’t help but wonder how the author came up with such disgusting actions/scenes (implying he must have “issues”) but then remembered I’ve seen all the movies listed under the Dear Reader plus “worse” movies. Lol

Please take note that not all scary stories have to take place at a crap motel starring a young, innocent couple. What about an old couple… and somewhere else?

I wish there would have been a little more at the end relating to the other clown sightings and why it took the cops so long to get there, especially after the “rookie” died.

I also wish there would have been a little more to the storyline than just a bunch of people stranded in a motel during a storm with no phone service while killer clowns took over.

I “also” also wish there would have been some backstory on the clowns, especially Puddin’ given she was a cannibal and loved torturing people at only nineteen.

Moving on, the descriptions were so… descriptive/easy to image and in both a good and bad way. I imagine I had a disgusted expression throughout the majority of this story. But there were some scenes that felt overdone, like when all the injuries were listed. The scene with Monique… OMG. I don’t think I’ll ever forget that in addition to the voice chosen by the narrator when Puddin’ asked, “Should I eat it?” I might be traumatized after that. That was disgusting and disturbing, and had me wondering what I had just listened to. Of course that means the author, and the narrator, in that case, did a great job!

Unfortunately, the majority of the time, the narrator sounded like a next-level computerized voice based on the way he pronounced words (pronouncing all the letters) and the stilted way he spoke (That. Terrified. Him. Or “co.mit.mint” like he wasn’t sure how to pronounce a word). The voice he did for Maleak(?) sounded weird like a woman trying to sound like a man but doing it badly. But!!! On a positive note, Mr. Narrator, I do have to say you did a phenomenal job with the clown voices. Wow! Those really added to the creepiness of the story.


Questions/Comments:

There were too many simple dialogue tags (he/she said). And I always feel the ones that go before the dialogue take me out of the story. It’s a better flow when they go at the end.

While I could appreciate the scientific terms overall, sometimes they didn’t flow with the rest of the sentence/narrative.

—I might have missed a part—but was it not until Chapter 9: More Company that Puddin’ was introduced as a female? I might have missed a female descriptor earlier on. Otherwise, it seemed strange given all she did up to that point to not let the reader know she was female.

The end of the story actually made me think of the movie “Us.”

The story, which I have a hard copy of, was fast-paced, full of Gory, Slasher vibes. I could not put it down. On to book two.

I absolutely loved this book, even though clowns bother me for several reasons. Reading it was akin to facing my fear and was left at the end of thinking "yep, hate those nasty ***tards". Off to read the second book in the series now 😂.
