Ok but not really for beginners.

The three stars I gave this go pretty much entirely to the narrators, who do a very good job. They both speak clearly and slowly, and the audio quality is good. If you are already almost fluent in Mandarin, only want extra listening practice, and have very low standards for engaging storytelling, I imagine this audiobook is ok for you.

I expect an audiobook for beginning language learners to have stories with basic vocabulary and grammatical structures. I expect that vocabulary and grammar to be introduced to the listener in simple, clear ways that make it easy to pick up new words and rules by listening alone. All of these stories include many vocabulary and grammar concepts that are HSK 3-6 (not beginner). New vocabulary and grammar is often not repeated more than once, which makes it even more difficult to pick up.

I also expect that many beginners want to follow along with the written version of the book to learn Chinese characters. Unfortunately, the written version of this audiobook is riddled with errors in both the pinyin and simplified Chinese versions of the translations. Additionally, the English versions don't clearly translate the Mandarin, which means that, unless you already know what the Mandarin words mean, the English translations don't help you learn new words and grammar.

Also the stories are painfully boring. I'm not sure who thought a short story about, for example, how to ride the Channel Tunnel, would be relevant and interesting to people interested in learning Mandarin Chinese.

Not for beginners at all

The title is misleading. This is definitely not a beginner's level, and this is confirmed by a Chinese native speaker.

There is a missing part of the story as well where the English version is a lot longer than the Chinese version, which can be confusing for those who are actually beginner's Chinese learner.

The other thing I find disconcerting is that the stories are based on a family's lives in the UK. It would have been more interesting and relevant if the stories are based on life & culture in China. Why would someone learn how to talk about Chester in Chinese, for example?

The only good thing about this book is the pronunciation.

Can you read along as audio is playing?

I downloaded the app expecting to be able to read along as the audio plays. I don't see any way to display the text of the book, though.
