“A new series that promises to be just as engrossing [as Frontlines]…the action just as exciting, the science just as solid, the tension just as high. I gulped down the first book in a day, and I am already eager for the next one.”—George R. R. Martin

Across the six-planet expanse of the Gaia System, the Earthlike Gretia struggles to stabilize in the wake of an interplanetary war. Amid an uneasy alliance to maintain economies, resources, and populations, Aden Robertson reemerges. After devoting fifteen years of his life to the reviled losing side, with the blood of half a million casualties on his hands, Aden is looking for a way to move on. He’s not the only one.

A naval officer has borne witness to inconceivable attacks on a salvaged fleet. A sergeant with the occupation forces is treading increasingly hostile ground. And a young woman, thrust into responsibility as vice president of her family’s raw materials empire, faces a threat she never anticipated.

Now, on the cusp of an explosive and wide-reaching insurrection, Aden plunges once again into the brutal life he longed to forget. He’s been on the wrong side of war before. But this time, the new enemy has yet to reveal themselves...or their dangerous endgame.

I loved it

I’m already a big fan of Kloos’ and have listened to each of the Frontlines books several times. His stories have always been entertaining and well written, but this is a whole new beast.

Where Frontlines was a fairly typical military sci-fi series, this book has new layers of sophistication I wasn’t expecting. The plot weaves together beautifully and the characters feel even more realized. I cannot wait for the next book in the series to see where Kloos takes this.

Definitely a writer who only appears to get better with each book.

Luke Daniels’ narration is fantastic as always.

Couldn’t stop listening

this book felt like it was the introduction of a bigger novel. like the first chapters where you set up some of the main characters. I understand that this is part of a series, but nothing really happened aside from describing some characters. there is allusion to some group of players that will become the antagonists, but nothing really materializes aside from some piracy. I'm going to try the next book to see if anything materializes, but I'm not hopeful. weird though, especially given the fact that these books have good reviews.

nothing really happens

i like the writting style but the book just seemed to kinda hang up a little toward the end and I feel the conclusion was more a middle point then an ending.

Good book.

Easy to listen to. Has nice mix of back story and action. Looking forward to next book.

Good audiobook

It did not seem to have an ending that pulled all of the people together in a meaningful way.

Ends a little on the short side.

This is great book. It has a good mix of action and good characters. I enjoyed it.

Very Good

Kloos has quickly moved to the top tier in my eyes. Frontlines was one of my favorite series. This series feels a tiny bit more formulaic and I've never lived the narrative style where we get thrown around between a bunch of protagonists. He manages that trope well enough, though, and the world building is top notch. I'm fascinated by the background of this sci-fi universe and the politics of the factions in the book. The characters are generally interesting - residually Aden. Overall, I would give this a 5/5.

But I can't.

Not because the narration is bad. No, in fact Daniels has only further cemented himself as a narrator who can sell me a book regardless of whether I'm interested. The reason I can't is because the book doesn't finish. It just ends. I was listening today, and as it got to the end of a chapter, it was just done. Nothing gets wrapped up, there is no story arc. Nothing. Just an ended book. I'm sure that those reading this review a few years from now won't care - they'll just buy the next book - but I'm writing this review just a few months after it was released, and I'm feeling a little high and dry. Not enough to take more than one star off, but definitely enough to be annoyed.

mini-grrr

Loved the Book; Hated the (missing) Ending

This book itself doesn’t have an ending. It can’t really be enjoyed on its own. It just cuts off with no resolution. You have to continue buying books in the series to feel any type of resolution. It’s like a television show telling you to tune in next year.
The content itself is very good but I was hoping for a little more of a wrap up since it is listed as a novel in a series instead of an episode.

A little too meta

I wanted to read this book because of the narrator. I ended up liking the book and found it very interesting and look forward to the next installment.

Decent
