Laughs by the mile

LAUGHS BY THE MILE

Steer your summer road trip toward hilarity with
these travel-ready comedy listens.
What’s the opposite of road rage? No, that’s not the setup to a joke—I leave the funny stuff to the professionals. But personally, I find the miles fly by in the car (or Greyhound bus, long-haul flight, Hamptons jitney, what have you) with a dose of comedy—especially when it’s one I can share with my travel buddies. Whether you prefer a literal road-trip story, the metaphorical journey of a celebrity memoir, or an episodic adventure you can easily pause for pit stops, I hope these picks inspire you to get from point A to point B with the help of some vitamin C(omedy). Told you I’m no comedian! —Kat, Audible Editor

    • An It Girl Walks Onto an Airplane
    • Speaking of the '90s, indie goddess Parker Posey (Party Girl, Dazed and Confused) defined bratty cool for my generation, and her brand-new "self-mythologizing" memoir shows her still at the top of her eccentrically hilarious game. She addresses you as if she's sitting next to you on a plane, dishing behind-the-scenes gossip (remember her two-episode stint on Louie? ALL. EARS), fame, and cocktail recipes, making this a perfectly meta listen for your next flight.

Andrew Sean Greer's remarkable romantic comedy takes you around the world with its pushing-50 protagonist, from Paris and Berlin to Morocco and India, delivering laughs and insights in equal measure. Plus, it's the audiobook about which David Sedaris told us: "Perfect book, perfect reader. Had no interest in it ending. Never did I stray, never did my mind stray for one moment, and if it did, I would rewind it." #ListeningGoals—just saying.

    • Rollicking Essays with Zero F*cks Given
    • Samantha Irby isn’t a self-help guru, but her bold, unapologetic take on what it’s like to be a bald, queer, plus-size black woman in a world that wasn't made for her is downright empowering—and hilarious. The interconnected essays are perfect for taking on the road (provided you're somewhere you can laugh, cry, and nod furiously without fear of being committed). And feel free to chow down on your snackage of choice while you absorb fat-positive truths such as "Dieting is crazy and turns most of us jerks into insufferable babies." Pass the Cheetos!

    • If you're traveling within the US and you're a comedy fan, I'm going to have to insist that you listen to Sklars & Stripes, a one-of-a-kind docu-comedy that follows twin brothers Randy and Jason Sklar on tour. Conceived in the aftermath of the 2016 election, the series takes the Sklars through 10 cities in red and blue states across the country, highlighting the brothers' pitch-perfect banter, on-stage recordings and documentary-style interviews with locals. It's an on-the-road classic that will make you laugh out loud, while offering a fresh lens on the current climate and America itself.

    • Black Comedy for Morbid Weirdos (Like Me)
    • Fair warning—this isn't the best choice if your transportation mode is, say, the quiet car in a business-class train or worse, the family station wagon. But if you've got a car full of macabre-leaning adults, you can do no better than the deeply weird, deeply hilarious oeuvre of Christopher Moore, and you can start with this reliable crowd-pleaser. Fisher Stevens brilliantly narrates the story of the unwitting everyman who finds himself with the "dirty job" of a Grim Reaper. I found this book through the sages of Reddit, and I'm willing to bet it gets an upvote from everyone in your caravan.

    • All Hail the Queen of Comedy
    • Tiffany Haddish needs no introduction from me, but if you only know her from Girls Trip and her legendary SNL monologue (spoiler alert, she slayed), her deeply personal, acclaimed memoir will show you another side. Chronicling her unbelievable journey from a poor, dysfunctional family in South Central LA to the world of stand-up and eventually Hollywood, her story will have you laughing and crying from her unmistakeable, pitch-perfect delivery. Fun fact: This book was ghost-written by noted "fratire" writer Tucker Max. Discuss!

    • The Essential Oddball American History
    • If you're a fan of The Dollop, the history podcast from comedians Dave Anthony and Gareth Reynolds, you already know why this is a perfect listen to take on the road. Coming in under a tidy three hours, the format lets Anthony and Reynolds flex their knowledge of obscure history while filling you with hilariously useless facts. From a death-trap amusement park in New Jersey to the quack doctor who implanted men with goat testicles to cure impotence, you'll be glad you're headed somewhere—anywhere—other than the darkest, most disturbing corners of American lore.

    • Eavesdropping on the World's Weirdest Phone Calls
    • This one doesn't come out until later in August, but it's definitely going to come in handy when you're stuck in traffic on Labor Day weekend. I am a sucker for off-the-cuff improv comedy, so I'm very stoked for this unscripted Audible Original. Starring a cast of more than 40 comedians (Paul F. Tompkins, D'Arcy Carden, Kyle Mooney, and more) in the fictional town of South Grampers, California, the story is told entirely through phone calls. In 13 acts of around half an hour each, it's perfect for shorter jaunts—or, in gridlock hell, bingeing all six hours. Happy trails!
