Spirit of the Season
"I listened to this book the week leading up to Christmas and I have to say, I could not have picked a better time. It really made me think. It reminded me, as I sat in bumper-to-bumper traffic due to holiday shopping, just what the holidays are REALLY about. As good as Tuesdays with Morrie was, the time you'll spend here with "The Reb" will touch your heart and never let go. I've read everything Mitch Albom has ever written and this is, by far, my favorite!" -- Christine, Audible Listener

Story
It’s 2011, and Samuel Andresen-Anderson—college professor, stalled writer—has a Nix of his own: his mother, Faye. He hasn’t seen her in decades, not since she abandoned the family when he was a boy. Now she’s re-appeared, having committed an absurd crime that electrifies the nightly news, beguiles the internet, and inflames a politically divided country. The media paints Faye as a radical hippie with a sordid past, but as far as Samuel knows, his mother was an ordinary girl who married her high-school sweetheart.

Power Knitting With a Best Seller
Before I discovered audiobooks, my daily commute came with a tough choice: read, or knit? I am equally passionate about both pastimes - as are many of the crafters I've met - so it seemed especially cruel and unusual that I couldn't do both at once. And when I was in a panic to finish knitting holiday gifts I should have started in August, my literary life would suffer. Listening while knitting is possibly the best thing to ever happen to my crafting output. Plus, I love the fact that I always associate a finished item with the book I was listening to at the time (preferably a long one to last me through multiple projects). This year's gifts will come courtesy of The Nix!

Story
Have you ever wondered how the lives of great composers-especially when set against the social, political, and cultural context of their world-influences their music? After listening to this perceptive series of eight lectures on the life and music of Ludwig van Beethoven, you will likely find that you hear his work in an entirely different way, your insight informed by new knowledge of how Beethoven was able to create masterpieces from the crises of his life. You'll learn about the years of progressive hearing loss-ultimately to produce total deafness-and the understandable agony and rage such a fate would bring upon a composer. About his deep depression over the end of his relationship with the woman he calls his Immortal Beloved. About his pathological hatred of authority, his persecution complex, even delusional behaviors. But you'll also learn how each of these crises, and many others, served to drive Beethoven inward, to reinvent himself and redeem his suffering through art, creating disruptive works of profound passion and beauty that reinvented the nature of musical expression in the Western world.

Holiday Wrapping Inspired by Beethoven
"....Although I've been listening to or watching Great Courses for years - many dozens of them - It is the first Great Masters course I've tried. I became so thoroughly engaged that I couldn't stop listening. For the rest of my day off, while I went to the market, folded laundry, finished Christmas gift wrapping and did some holiday baking I listened. While I made our dinner I listened. When I normally would sit down in the afternoon and read for a couple of hours, I listened instead. I finished it in one day...." -- Ann, Audible Listener

In 1914, the war which was to have been wrapped up by Christmas had - in reality - only just begun, as all sides entrenched themselves deeper into the Great War. Christmas Eve, 1914 follows one company of British officers as they rotate forward to spend their Christmas on the front lines, a mere 80 yards from the German guns. Upper- and working-class men and boys are thrown together into one trench and struggle to survive.
