About this listen

The New York Times best-selling debut book of poetry from Lana Del Rey, Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass.

Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass is the title poem of the book and the first poem I wrote of many. Some of which came to me in their entirety, which I dictated and then typed out, and some that I worked laboriously picking apart each word to make the perfect poem. They are eclectic and honest and not trying to be anything other than what they are and for that reason I’m proud of them, especially because the spirit in which they were written was very authentic.” (Lana Del Rey)

Lana’s breathtaking first book solidifies her further as “the essential writer of her times” (The Atlantic). The collection features more than 30 poems, many exclusive to the book: "Never to Heaven", "The Land of 1,000 Fires", "Past the Bushes Cypress Thriving", "LA Who Am I to Love You?", "Tessa DiPietro", "Happy, Paradise Is Very Fragile", "Bare Feet on Linoleum", and many more. The result is an extraordinary poetic landscape that reflects the unguarded spirit of its creator.

Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass is also brought to life in an unprecedented spoken-word audiobook that features Lana Del Rey reading 14 select poems from the book accompanied by music from Grammy Award-winning musician Jack Antonoff.

It flowed like the beautiful waterfall I believe Lana Del Rey's mind to be. I'm so grateful she shared these vignettes of her life and mind with us.

Wonderful!

This is one of the most beautiful things 2020 has given the world. Lana perfectly balances fragility with finding inner strength and being unapologetically herself in these verses. She feels more at home in poetry than in song and that’s incredible to say because her albums are undeniably some of the best in this century.

Lana at her best work.

I was very impressed with this collection! There were only 1 or 2 poems that I didn't love. I liked the flow of the collection, the insights and details into her life, and the acknowledgement of feelings we all share in regards to society and the environment. I listened to this twice in a row. I also enjoyed the music, which I believe was composed by Jack White. My favorite poems are the first one and the second to last one, as well as the one where she takes sailing/pilot lessons. Of course its always a plus when the author is also the narrator.

My only criticisms are 1. I wish the poem names were the chapter titles so we can know what we are listening to and 2. The music was way too loud in a few of the poems. I didn't take any stars off for this because it seemed more like a post-production issue rather than the performance itself.

Thought Provoking with Great Imagery
