I’ve always had too many men in my life. My overbearing father. My domineering older brothers. My invasive nephews. The Trents and Caruthers run this town, and although I’ve never given them a reason to worry, they treat me like I’m made of glass.
They’re wrong, though. At twenty-one, I finished college in record time, I own my own business, I pay taxes, I don’t party, and I’ve never broken a law.
But I have one secret: I raced to grow up in case he ever came back home.
Lucas Morrow grew up with my brothers and my family, but he left when I was thirteen. I’ve waited to see him again, making sure everything is perfect.
But I’ve realized I’m waiting my life away. It’s time to move on. Maybe get my own place.
And I think I’m going to make some new friends, too.
It’s summer. Cookouts, Fourth of July, the Night Ride… I want freedom.
I mean, I am my brothers’ sister. Did they really think the apple fell that far?
Lucas
She thinks her family are the only men watching her. So innocent.
And I want to keep her that way. Even though I’m twelve years older, we were always the odd ones out around her family. She gravitated to me, and I always made sure she wasn’t alone. When I left, I told myself she’d be fine without me. They all would.
But really, it was just an excuse to escape the guilt.
I only meant to come back for a few days, but I never entertained the thought that she’d grown up. Her brothers are distracted, and one bad decision after another is circling her.
A motocross racer who can’t stop whispering in her ear.
A criminal from across the tracks who can’t stop looking.
Old ghosts.
And old enemies.
She doesn’t want a babysitter anymore, and if she ever finds out why I left town, she’ll know why I’m not the best role model.
But I’m still the older one.
And she still needs supervision.

Penelope Douglas truly delivers like no one else. Her stories are immersive, intense, and unforgettable. Og fan since Bully and Rival :)
My only wish - dual format of the audiobook would have been better, but still both narrators did a great job.
Enjoyed every moment

In Quiet Ones, Penelope takes us on a ride of deep emotional longing with Quinn Caruthers and Lucas Morrow. Quinn has done everything and anything she can to grow up fast. Lucas Morrow has done everything he can to leave Shelburne Falls, Weston, and everyone he loves in the past. When the sale of his childhood home brings him, reluctantly, back home, the family, friends, and the girl he left behind have him wanting to stay to keep them safe, while the secrets he was running from have him ready to flee again to do the same.
I. Freaking. Loved. This. Book. Quite Ones has been a much anticipated read for me. I’ve been read for Quinn and Lucas to have a story since Pen gave us a little glimpse into Quinn’s personality and where Lucas was at in life in Next to Never. The wait paid off. Just like it did for Quinn and Lucas. The longing between these two once they come together as adults is off the charts. Like trying to resist even though one MC is truly all in. I just love how playful they are together and the trust they sort of fall naturally into, but also have the build up once again. If you enjoy stories where it really starts with one person longing for the other in a mostly unrequited way, but ends up with the oblivious person falling that much harder, QO is the book. I think the pay off is greater if you read the Hellbent series in its entirety and probably Next to Never (Quinn’s parents story through her POV reading a book) not only because you get background on Quinn and Lucas, but because there’s an ongoing subplot in this series about a torrid love affair of the past. It plays into the lore of both of the small towns and the pieces we get in this book gave us so many more answers while also adding to the questions.
I always love reading the books in the series because not only do you get an angsty love story, but you get a glimpse at all the side characters (who have books planned) or the original generation of characters from the Fall Away series. It will never get old reading Jared, Jax, and Madoc as husbands, dads, and big brothers. Plus all the new characters that Pen is building. Love Farrow, love Noah, love Tommy and can’t wait for her story. The world just feels so layered there’s no way to get bored with all that’s going on. Sigh. It was perfect. I honestly can’t wait to read it again, so I can highlight and tab all my favorite parts and quotes. 10/10 rec both this series and the Fall Away series that came before it.
Lucas Morrow and I are too old to play together now.
