Publisher's summary

A wealthy and bitter exile, the most dangerous and desirable man in all of England, burns to possess a proud, headstrong beauty who is promised to another.

Winning Emma Stokehurst's exquisite hand through threats and determination does nothing to fill the empty spaces in Nikola's heart—until passion's magic carries the handsome, tormented prince back to a bygone era of splendor and romantic dreams. For there his destiny awaits him in a distant life. And in one remarkable woman's tender touch—achingly familiar but gloriously new—he must seek the elusive promise of ecstasy . . .and learn, at last, to love.

Beautiful, unexpected story

Having listened to so many of this author’s works, this one was unexpected. The magic in it makes it one of my favorites!

This series is not my favorite

It was too long, but a sweet story of true love and pride and hope and fear. Rosalyn Landon is amazing as always.

What a ride!

This is my favorite Klepyas book. The story had so many layers. Pretty predictable but I find comfort in a happy ending.

Historical plot intertwining

This is my second read and I found it to better the second time. I found that I like the that the prince has ancient ties to a famous Russian czar, which provides a certain mystical quality to his background. The story well narrated by Rosalyn Landor who always does and excellent job. I highly recommend it.🙌🏾🙌🏾

From the 300 audio book I own this is in the top 5

This story contains so many elements and is complete that I am in love with it I didnt want it to end. From the 300 audio book I own this is in the top 5 if not the first.. I would love if the story line continued.
Rosalyn Landor is a master of her craft, I cant even hear another narrator. This book along with my fav narrator made my year.

Whoa, this one needs content warnings (spoilers)

If, like me, you choose to immerse yourself in the delightful Victorian worlds of Lisa Kleypas as read by the incomparable Rosalyn Landor in order to escape the brutality of the real world, you might want to give this one a miss. I can handle a dark romance, but I’m only about three hours into this one and already I’ve had to strategically fast forward multiple times to avoid hearing some truly disturbing content. Be forewarned - this book contains graphic descriptions of torture, harrowing passages detailing animal abuse, oh, and I haven’t even mentioned our hero, Nicholas, yet. Nicholas is…I don’t even know where to start. He’s a cruel Russian prince-exile who has been obsessed with the heroine, Emma, since meeting her *at the age of twelve*. If you’ve read the first book in this series, you’ll already know that Nicholas hunted down Emma’s stepmother, Tasia, across Europe to drag her back to Russia for execution, after Tasia was framed for the murder of Nicholas’s even crueler and more disturbed brother. Arriving in England at death’s door, Nicholas meets the tween Emma and (I suppose) immediately begins plotting how he will ruin her life to satisfy his disturbing obsession. Sheesh. I’ll finish this book, but then I’m running straight back into the arms of the Ravenels (another excellent Kleypas series) for a palate cleanser. Five stars for Ms. Landor’s exquisite narration and, as always, Kleypas’s writing is excellent (this is one of her earliest books, I believe), but the story itself is a bit too much for this gentle listener.

Very entertaining

I love this narrator and had listened to all of Julia Quinn’s novels. I did a search for Rosalyn Landor and found this author. It feels very similar to a Julia Quinn novel and I enjoyed it very much!

Did not like

Story went too many directions. Couldn’t keep up with the pace or story or where I was.
