Publisher's summary

This masked lord....

Lord Jasper, younger son of a marquess, suffered horrible burns fighting in the Napoleonic Wars. He wears a mask to hide his face from the stares and screams and finds comfort in the shadows. Jasper is an exceptional bounty hunter, so when a woman summons him to her deathbed and asks him to find her runaway daughter before she passes away, he doesn't refuse. Jasper is close to his quarry when he's knifed by an assailant. Imagine his surprise when he regains consciousness in the arms of the woman he seeks. Except she's not at all what he expected....

Is not the only one with scars.

On a remote cliff on the sea, Olivia Carlisle calls her five-year-old son in from an approaching storm. But the little boy is more interested in the man he's found on the trail to their hidden cottage. Olivia fears men and wants nothing more than to leave the injured man where she found him. But his knife wound is severe, and with the approaching storm, she knows leaving him will condemn him to death. As Jasper begins to heal, Olivia acknowledges her attraction to him, even though such emotions terrify her almost as much as returning to London. Jasper must convince her that her only chance at safety is to challenge the man who pursues her. They must travel into the lion's den - he to face his vulnerability and she to face her worst fears.

Contains mature themes.

Why the low reviews?

This was a great story from beginning to the end. Without giving too much away there is rape involved…it’s disheartening to see not much has changed in regards to how women are perceived, judged and shunned when this happens. However the FC was very strong and determined which made me love this book even more♥️.

Wonderful!!

Oh, how I loved this book! The premise is original and felt like a combo between the old American West and the British Regency. The characters come to life, and I couldn't help love and root for the MCs. Both 9f them underdogs but strong in spirit and self-worth! Plus, a HEA & great narration. What more can a reader want?

Enjoyed

I liked the storyline. We romanticize this era, which is why we read these books, but women really were treated horribly. Great narration.

I liked it

There were too many words. Meaning therre was a whole lot of unnecessary yakking.

Wonderful.

Her writing reminds me of Christi Caldwell. If you love Christi you’ll love this author. Narrator is fabulous… if I could just get past the way she says “pleasure”.. cringy.

Mystery, Murder, Romance-Fantastic Combination

Just started listening to Shana Galen. Her books are fantastic. They start with some exciting event and keep your interest to the very end. Not much inner thoughts as so many authors use. First time listening to narrator, Victoria Aston. She is now one of my favorites.

Best in series

I feel like this book is the best in the series thus far. I seriously thought that I might not listen to this book as the last book in the series was terrible, in my opinion. I only listened to it because it appears that it was in the Plus catalog and didn't cost me a credit. I'm glad that I did.

One thing, though. I read another review where someone gave this a really low rating because it contained a rape. That reviewer is entitled to their opinion, but let me just say:
1. The rape was in the past
2. It was not explained in great detail.
3. She was not raped by the main hero of the story.
4. The fact that someone had been raped in the past in a work of fiction does not affect me the same way as it would if they were perhaps raped in the process of the current story, if that makes any sense...
5. Rape happens in the real world and therefore isn't completely out of place in stories. I think the fact that it was explained that she had been through something so horrible only makes her journey of learning to trust again so much better. I love a happy ending, especially for someone who has been through something horrible.
6. The rapist didn't come out unscathed.

So, knowing that, make your own decisions as to whether you read or listen to this story. I'm certainly glad that I did.

lo odio

Spoiler alert. I am not a fan of books with rape in them. Otherwise I would have rated this book a 3 or 4 stars.
