Publisher's summary

It’s a case of mistaken identities and unmistakable attraction in New York Times best-selling author Lynsay Sands’ classic historical romance, previously published as The Reluctant Reformer!

Lady Maggie Wentworth must support herself as an investigative reporter. Writing under another name, she’s been exposing the notorious scandals of the ton - this time it’s the “working girls” of London. While interviewing the women, a client enters, and Maggie is shocked to see her beau. She changes clothes with one of the girls and flees out the window, only to be whisked away by a stranger.

Lord James is honoring a deathbed promise: watch over his late friend’s sister. Following Maggie to a house of ill repute, he’s stunned to see her emerge dressed as the notorious Lady X! Hard times must have driven her to such a desperate act, and he is intent on reforming the wanton chit. No amount of protest will stop him from saving her reputation. Now, if only he can hold his own desires in check - and keep himself from falling in love.

A Lady in Disquise

This was a slow moving book in the beginning but it had some twist and turns that made it a delightful listen.

The narrator has a pleasant voice for each character and knows how to bring the characters alive.

Recommend to listen.

I enjoyed it but....

I enjoyed this book and the narration was pretty good. I have acclimated to Justin Eyre's style and am no longer distracted by it.

The story was about a young lady trying to keep her household together after her brother dies. She assumes the role of investigative journalist writing intriguing stories for wages. However, while investigating a story about bordellos she was taken from the Bordello by her brother's friend who promised to look out for her, thinking to reform her ways. There is good dialogue and enough inner thoughts to help you understand the character's perspective. Maggie is a strong, capable, independent female who is not overly concerned with social conventions. James is the typical strong, protective, stubborn male who fights his feelings for Maggie. Overall I enjoyed listening to the story and laughed out loud at times.

What I found a little frustrating were: 1. It was ridiculous to me that he did not just come right out and ask her if she was working at the bordello instead of dancing around the topic until more than half the book was over. One conversation would have cleared up the misunderstanding. Nevertheless, the mishaps leading up to James learning she was not a prostitute were entertaining. 2. The reason for the attempts on her life was absolutely weak and this fact disappointed me. I believe the author could have come up with something better or more believable. 3. The ending. I absolutely hate when authors wait until the last 20 minutes of the story to resolve the conflict, leaving the reader/listener feeling like the story is not finished.

Despite all of these frustrations I did enjoy listening. Is it worth a credit? Maybe..

One of my favorite authors

Great storytelling .. Seasoned writer. After reading some freebies and some newbies it’s very refreshing to go back to some of the more seasoned writers where you get depth, substance, and characters that are enjoyable. I liked the story. The only thing I did not like was, their very first sexual encounter. I thought it was rather tacky. Especially for a virgin and a “gentleman”. Anyway… You’ll get there. Other than that, I enjoyed the story very much. Onto the next!

This book was hilarious 😂

I loved the whole thing!! 👏🏾👏🏾 The mood of this book is totally different from a lot of historical romance novels I’ve read before. Very lighthearted, sexy and fun! Justine Ere is just the best narrator ever! She brings this extra zing when she’s narrating any books!

Very Good Listen

I like the mistaken identity and the comic relief of the book. I can’t remember the last time a book had me laugh out loud.

Overall good… but…

For such a well written book, did you have to make her such a “too stupid to live” character. After finding out some evildoer was attempting to unalive her—-she goes out alone yet again??? She is 25, not 16.. I just like more intelligent characters so I was very unimpressed with her in the end.

To be so smart....

the heroine repeatedly did stupid things! I enjoyed the book not the typical "meet cute".
