Publisher's summary

The book that inspired the feature film The Stranger (Netflix), starring Joel Edgerton and Sean Harris.

The disappearance of Queensland schoolboy Daniel Morcombe was one of the most heartbreaking and confounding child abduction and murder cases of the century, spanning almost a decade prior to the eventual arrest of known pedophile Brett Peter Cowan, one of the original persons of interest.

The story of the police sting that resulted in his confession reads like crime fiction, featuring an elaborately staged fake crime gang run by a 'Mr Big' that lured Cowan in with the promise of a hefty payout.

The Sting takes you on a journey behind Australia's most sensational undercover bust, revealing extraordinary new details. It is a shocking insight into one of the country's most evil killers, and the operation that brought him down.

Excellent narration for ghastly content

1 spoiler in this review, for those unfamiliar with the circumstances. I watched "The Stranger" which focused on the sting operation and wanted to learn more about the child and family involved. This book is gut-wrenching. Glad to know the bastard was convicted.

A first-rate police procedural

I was reluctant to read this because it centers on a child abduction/murder, so you know it will be depressing. But the author has done a truly excellent job of researching and explaining one of the largest criminal investigations of all time (the official police SUMMARY of the investigation exceeded 10,000 pages). This is head-and-shoulders above a typical true crime book. I appreciated that it included a substantial digression on the "Mr. Big" sting the police used to coax a confession out of the killer. In short, a first-rate book about a first-rate investigation.
