Publisher's summary

Flynn was only a teenager when her parents were killed in a terrible accident. Too young to lose her parents, too young to take on responsibility for her younger sister Kaiya, too young to protect Kaiya from the harshness of their new lives in the following years. Desperate to help her sister, Flynn reaches out to Willa Tomlinson, a grief counsellor renowned for helping her patients cope with profound loss. Under Willa’s influence and care, Kaiya finally seems to turn a corner, joining the climate action collective that Willa leads. Kaiya’s passion is ignited and she immerses herself in the group, leaving on frequent camping trips in the West Australian bush. But when a raging bushfire sweeps through the bushland near Margaret River, Kaiya fails to return with the rest of the group.

Noah is no stranger to loss or to violence, but these days, he’s more interested in helping people develop the skills to defend themselves than seeking out fights of his own. When Flynn enters his life, desperate to find out what really happened to her sister, a friendship sparks, and Noah finds himself agreeing to help her. To do so, he’ll need to infiltrate Willa’s cultish collective at the fireground.

In this new Original from the number one internationally best-selling author of The Ruin and The Murder Rule, Dervla McTiernan, Flynn and Noah must reckon with their pasts and fight to find the answers they seek before Kaiya’s trail burns out.

Please note: this audio contains strong language, distressing situations and descriptions of violence that some listeners may find upsetting. Discretion is advised.

Interesting storyline

This was different and held my interest. The narration was great. Two different stories coming together, great. But something has changed with the author because her last two books pale in comparison to the earlier ones.

Riveting, Excellent Performance

I consume everything Dervla Mctiernan writes - she never disappoints. The character development in this story is deep and engaging, and that alone makes it worth a listen. I felt that the story itself got more and more far fetched as it went on, but that didn't cure my need to know how it ended! The performance was flawless.

Excellent break from endless police procedurals.

Wonderful story and sympathetic characters. Gripping and fast moving. Using ordinary people suffering from distinct traumas who behave like normal good people do to solve a mystery is a wonderful story device. Satisfying!

What A GREAT Book!!

I had been listening to a different book (almost 1/2 way finished) but I was bored, waiting for the author to get the book going. Then, the Audible app suggested “The Fireground,” and I said, let me just listen to the first chapter. I was hooked! I never went back to the other book, I don’t even remember the title, but as soon as I check the lust in my library, if I find it, I’m going to delete it from my phone.

Loved the way Dervla developed the characters, and merge reader wondering what would happen next. I highly recommend this book!!

Loved it

I just love a story where terrible things almost happen but don't actually. Your mind is always figuring out a story and in this one when you think oh this rotten person or thing is about to happen and are vaguely disappointed at the probable outcome, the characters see the same bad thing and find ways to make good things happen instead. It was still quite suspenseful though - even while thinking I was in the capable hands of the author and that she wouldn't let me down.
