An enjoyable read
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I have been to Australia, and that gave an extra bonus because I could relate to the setting. I like the main character and I look forward to reading more about Lucas Walker.

Great Find
Found this book while looking for writers like Jane Harper and it is a great find. Story, characters, atmosphere and narration are all quite good. Held my attention all the way through and I will definitely get the next book in series.

Very good read
The narrator was great too. I enjoy getting out of the US and reading my favorite genre in a completely different place with appropriately accented English. I have also read Paradise, next in series, and am waiting for the 2024 release of 3rd in this series!

Description of the outback
The storyline which pictured a grandmother and the respect and love of her family mixed with the harsh reality of the red hot center of Australia kept my attention from beginning to end. Having visited Australia and seen the reality of the outback The writer brought these characters to life.

The characters and the story are really one dimensional to me. This feels like the author picked a very generic crime novel outline, then filled in the details as if it were a writing assignment. None of the characters are very complex. As they are presented in the story, their identities and motivations are summarized, leaving no room for interpretation. Even the bad guy gets a corny little summary about how his childhood made him the way he is. The cheap references to the impacts of climate change and the unfair treatment of indigenous peoples seem tacked on and insincere. It all just fell flat for me.
