Publisher's summary

How to help your child overcome social anxiety without stressing out, even if you’re feeling anxious yourself.

One day, I was at a restaurant with my wife, and as we were finishing up our meal, our server handed us a survey form. Realizing neither of us had a pen, my wife told me to ask the server if we could borrow one to fill out the form. Instead of doing this, I walked to the parking lot, retrieved a pen from our car, and walked back to our table. It would’ve been easier to just borrow a pen, but I opted for the route that involved less social interaction. I did this automatically, without even thinking. Avoiding social interaction had already become a learned habit by the time I realized what I was doing.

I would’ve probably continued avoiding things that made me feel uncomfortable and never faced my dread of being in social situations. However, when I saw all my struggles mirrored in my daughter, I knew that if I don’t deal with myself first, I’d never be able to help her navigate life as a socially anxious human being. Suddenly, the harsh light of reality didn’t seem so daunting anymore.

According to a 2022 Anxiety and Depression Association of America survey, out of the 40 million adults in the US that suffer from a form of anxiety, only 36.9 percent of them seek treatment.

In this book, you will discover:

  • How to help your child cope with anxiety when you have anxiety yourself.
  • How to recognize social anxiety in children.
  • Differences of social anxiety in children, teens, and adults.
  • Pitfalls of perfectionism.
  • Foods that affect anxiety.
  • Rewiring for self-confidence.
  • Making social interactions less stressful.

The process of overcoming social anxiety might seem like a terrifying or energy-depleting one, but once we learn the coping skills we need to become more functional in any social interaction, getting out there, building meaningful relationships, and enjoying life to the fullest will make it all worth it.

Must Share!!

My nephew stays glued to video games he's been like that since he started grade school now he's 23 yrs old, and socially awkward. He's not the only one to blame. It's a parents responsibility to get their child out more even for a couple of hours its vital. Being around people is best thing for your mental health, and to keep us up on our social skills. This book is loaded with good info on how to do that. It also educates on what happens when you don't. The production and narration was great. I shared this book with my sister it's something that she and my nephew need to hear. Thank you!!

Eye opening about social anxiety

A very informative book about social anxiety. It’s eye opening to learn about how social anxiety and other forms of anxiety can actually manifest and affect someone’s life in different age groups from children to adults. Most importantly it discusses the different ways a person can conquer social anxiety by starting with the knowlede then with simple strategies and life style changes that were discussed here. Overall, after listening to this, I had a better understanding about social anxiety and what people or families affected with social anxiety are going through. As a parent, this understanding will help you realize that in oder for you to help your child or family with social anxiety then helping yourself conquer it as well is by taking action or seeking help if you also have it. This is the first and best step in helping your child as shared by the author based on his own story. You can not pour out of an empty cup so fill up your cup first with knowledge. This book will definitely help you in doing so. I admire and thank the author for his bravery in sharing his personal experiences so others can learn from it.

Helpful And Straightforward

I like this book for the simple fact that it is an easy-to-follow guide for anyone suffering from social anxiety. I don't think social anxiety is a topic that gets discussed enough. Many adults and children suffer in silence because they are embarrassed to discuss it. The author did a great job shining a light on the topic in a straightforward and helpful approach.

The information I enjoyed the most was the discussion of how foods affect anxiety levels and what foods should be avoided. As a health coach, I always stress the importance of this to my own clients who suffer from mental health issues. Food affects our brains! More people need to understand this.

Overall the author did a fantastic job creating this informative book!

Excellent Practical Guide

Written by a former pediatrician who left medicine to become a photographer, this book is engaging and full of helpful suggestions for managing social anxiety and social phobia. Samson uses anecdotes from his own experiences with social anxiety, and those of his daughter, to make this audiobook a relatable personal journey as well as a guide to self-care & treatment for feeling better. The narrator is perfect for this topic. His voice is clear & warm like that of a trusted friend or advisor.

A Must Read for Parents

I can relate to many sections of this book. I have experienced social anxiety on a personal level and know how debilitating it can be. I like the way the author describes anxiety, its severity, and how it is diagnosed and treated. There is a section on bullying that I found to be especially good. Also, the Spotlight Method is explained in a way that you can make perfect sense of it. All in all, this is a great resource for parents. If you're looking for a guide to help with your children's anxiety this is a great resource.
