Publisher's summary

Power, corruption, and murder are coming for Buddy Lock and his family in a breathtaking thriller from author James Tucker.

A Long Island fishing crew makes a horrific catch: the bodies of an Asian couple dragged up with the trawl from the Atlantic. Homicide cop Buddy Lock knows there isn’t a chance in hell that this is some tragic accident. But as soon as his investigation begins, so do the warnings to back off. They’re not only coming from within the NYPD; they’re hitting close to Buddy’s heart: his new family has become the killer’s target.

When people start disappearing from Chinatown, Buddy finds himself on the trail of a killer whose motives are more twisting and far-reaching than the detective imagined. A killer who knows just how to get to him - by pursuing everyone he loves. Now Buddy can trust only himself - even as his relentless pursuit of justice plunges him into the most brutal waters of his career.

Corruption and Secrets...

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I think James Tucker has done a great job with THE HOLDOUTS. Christopher Lane is an excellent narrator and his terrific performance adds to the enjoyment.
Basically this book is about a large corporation buying up properties for development in NYC and the lengths they will go to when there is a handful of holdouts unwilling to sell.
In this book you think everything is laid out and predictable and you've got the whole story all wrapped up. Surprise! The ending is not what you think it will be.
This story is full of action and suspense as Buddy Locke is hunted by some really bad guys. His brother Ward always at the ready to save or assist. Buddy's fiancé Mei and Ben (the child they would like custody of) also become targets.

Great book and terrible narration..

Let me start by saying this (view spoiler). I hate that kind of shit.

Anyway, this was really twisty. I had two of the bad guys pegged but never imagined the last two. This was all about Russian mob money and 3 murders and one attempted murder. About huge high-rises being built in Chinatown in New York and the people who didn’t want to sell to the crooked buyers.

I liked this as much as the first book, Next of Kin, it was just as exciting and you had to wait until the very end to find all your unanswered questions answered.

The players are great: Buddy, Mei, Ben and Ward, as well as Brick, Chief Malone and Mingo.

There was no sex and the F-bomb was used 37 times.

As to the narration: Christopher Lane was better reading with emotion but his women’s voices were still horrid. I guess he thinks he doesn’t have to practice that, huh?

Another interesting story that kept me interested throughout most of the story. Definitely an interesting group of people.

Twisty, action packed plot & great Narrator

I definitely would not have guessed the many outcomes of this plot - it was multi-layered and twisted around which made it all the more believable and kept me listening to find out what happened next. Loved this Narrator for this book, he was perfect. Calm but clear and he did females and kids in a believable way, which is hard. Okay I did laugh when he would cry ‘bang...bang bang’ for the gun shots but that made it fun. Want to get to know Ward the Brother more! Maybe his own book?

Just Wonderful

You can't get any better writing, well done James Tucker. And no better audible than a story read by Christopher Lane.
Buddy Lock thrillers are the best. You just really can't get better than this. Suspense, mystery, action, relationships, emotion all wrapped in a detective thriller. A page turner or if audible you'll want to listen to it until it's finished. Highly recommend! Can't wait for the next book in this series.

Meh

A bit redundant. Plot not all that intriguing. Long and drawn out. Buddy sounds like a horrible example of a police officer. Hard to finish the audio version, somewhat boring and scattered.
