Publisher's summary

From the USA Today bestselling author of Robert Ludlum’s Treadstone series, The Guardianis an action-packed adventure with a hint of romance that’s perfect for fans of Extraction and Romancing the Stone.

When a retired Air Force PJ with nothing to lose is hired to rescue a kidnapped American from the depths of the Congo Basin, what was supposed to be a simple mission quickly turns into a fight for survival …

As a member of the elite Air Force Pararescue, Travis Lane abides by the motto “These things we do, that others may live.” After an injury forces him to consider retirement, he is blindsided when his brother-in-law is killed in the line of duty, leaving Lane as the sole support for his sister and the family farm they can no longer afford.

Desperate for something to help them keep the farm, Lane accepts an offer to join Broadside Solutions, a private company with specially trained military operatives who provide protection for clients all over the world. But it’s trial by fire when his first mission takes him to the Democratic Republic of the Congo to find and retrieve a kidnapped American in the middle of a densely forested jungle.

Infused with the author’s own experience as a parachute infantryman, this high-octane thriller throws the reader deep into the African jungle on a rescue mission where nothing is as it seems.

Love the story, buy…

I’m a fan of Mr Hood’s, but I have some complaints. Why do these stories require that any female be a “weak Nancy?” It just pisses me off when the female protagonist freezes in place, doesn’t pickup the weapon dropped by the bad guy just incapacitated, or refuses to shoot and yells “stop” at the mf who was just trying to kill her. Now let’s talk about how she feels sorry for having to shoot the SOB anyway.

Is it because you believe this is how your male audience sees women? Or is this your personally held belief we see reflected in your writing. As a woman I feel insulted and angry every time I encounter this ridiculousness.

Mild Spoiler Alert:

In the story she’s a white female FBI special agent who has been stationed in Africa and been involved in undercover operations. So we are to expect that the best she can do for strategy is remember a class from when she was 16?? For me the issues above totally ruined what is overall a very good action filled story. If you can get past the pathetic portrayal of the female character you will enjoy it. Enjoy!

Definitely action packed

Scott Brick does his usual stellar job. Joshua Hood is a new to me Author. The story was action packed and an introduction to the world of PJs. A branch of the service that does not get enough attention.

Hoping for a series

This is the first book that I've read by Joshua Hood and I very much enjoyed it. Makes me wonder why I haven't come across a novel that's centered around a PJ before. Sure, there were a couple questionable plot lines, but Travis Lane is a great character and I'm hoping for more. Scott Brick did a fine job narrating. All-in-all, a nice surprise.

I didn’t expect this book to be so good, but I couldn’t stop listening to it once I began. I really hope that this is the start of a great series.
