Publisher's summary

When Maddie Fraser's father was killed fighting for Bonnie Prince Charles, the spirited Scottish lass swore to avenge his death. Hooded and disguised, she led a series of daring raids against the forces of the Crown - vowing to love no man until the English invaders were driven from her native soil.

Captain Garrett Marshall was entrusted with the capture of the mysterious brigand called "Black Jack". But the sensuous, azure-eyed beauty hidden beneath the bandit's manly garb tested Garrett's loyalty to his king. Inflamed by a desire he could not ignore, the handsome officer would wed his bewitching enemy to save her from the gallows. But first he'd have to quell her hatred...and conquer her heart.

fantastic!

I loved this book. the story, the history, the characters. everything about it. the narration can make or break the best story, Victoria was amazing. I will look for other books with this team for certain and books by her narration. it is worth 2 credits not just 1.

It begins at Culloden …

First, let’s talk about narration. This narrator drove me crazy! No matter how bad the narration, I rarely discard a book because of bad performance. Most of the time, even if the narration is awful, if you hand in there you will get used to it enough to finish the book. I almost put this book down. Luckily I finally got used to listening to this narrator’s monotone to finish the story. I wish they could or would use talented actors who vary the oral interpretation of the script to give it real life. They are out there because I’ve heard some of them but this lady is not one of them! The story was very good. The characters were well developed and the plot was entertaining. It was a little long in that I wish Mandy would have come to her senses about her feelings for Garrett sooner before he is almost killed. She was so stupid to hold onto her prejudice so long and I hate stupidity in the heroine. How did she think she beat the punishment for her crimes. Because she was beautiful? Intelligent? Obviously there was some kind of deal because, even today, there is some kind of deal. To go back to her life without asking some questions as to how or why makes her stupidity beyond belief.

DNF

I liked the idea of this story, but I when I started listening I didn't enjoy the narrator. She does dialogue and accents very well, but every thing else is spoke with a flat urgent tone.
But main my problem was the hatred and vitriol that was continuous throughout the story. It's not that I didn't understand why it was happening and that that WAS what this story was about. If I was just reading it, I may have felt differently, but to listen to anger, hatred and revulsion for hours was exhausting for me personally. I had to quit.
