Publisher's summary

Alexander Denford, Baron Sedgwick, is a gentleman to be envied. He lives a rakish life of well-celebrated ease and contentment and has one person to thank for his perfectly ordered existence - his dearest wife, Emmaline. She never complains about his mistresses or his penchant for late nights out.

His friends are envious, but they don't know the truth - Emmaline doesn't exist. But when he starts receiving bills from London for clothes, shoes, hats, and a staggering amount of other female accouterments, he realizes something is decidedly amiss.

Posing as Emmaline isn't a stretch for the newly arrived Lady Sedgwick, she's been conning gentry for years. But as the popular baron's wife, she now has the one thing that has eluded her - entree into London's inner circles. Against Alexander's better judgment, Emmaline is impossibly fixed in his life. And suddenly Emmaline is challenging him to be the husband she deserves.

Fun romance

Great story with twists, mysteries, scandal and of course romance. Can follow along while doing chores and office work. Will look for another by this author. Pleasantly surprised.

Great listen!!

I really enjoyed this historical romance. Lots of great characters and a few plot twists. It just made me happy. And I like that in a book.

Emmaline, the perfect wife, until.......

The imaginary Emmaline was the perfect wife until she became a real person. Alex and his friend, Jack, had made up Emmaline as Alex's wife in order to keep the women away from Alex. Alex was a great catch - rich and a member of the ton. Alex claimed that Emmaline was an invalid, thus she was never seen. Alex was very surprised when he started receiving bills for expensive women's clothes and furnishing for his London town house. He rushed to London and found a beautiful sexy woman living in his townhouse and claiming to be Emmaline. She was having a grand time redecorating his home and buying expensive clothes. Of course he wants to get her out immediately, well maybe soon, or maybe in a couple of weeks. Emmaline is smart, cagey and street smart. She is a great actress and storyteller and loved by all the servants in Alex's home. . She turns out to be extremely difficult for Alex to throw out. His life changes from being dull, safe and stuffy to becoming extremely lively. Lots of surprises in store for Alex and for the listener of this tale. At first I did not like the character Emmaline, but as I got to know her better, I began to really like her. The author has a talent for creating vivid characters and writing clever and witty dialog. This is a fun story and I listened straight through. I had a toothache at the time and this book helped to take my mind off my tooth.

The narrator is excellent. She does not act, or use multiple accents. She reads the book with a lovely voice and great timing. I enjoyed her narration tremendously.

Laugh out loud funny

An intrepid heroine, a hero who needs to get over himself, two avaricious in-laws and a scandalous grandmother all intertwine in a witty plot that comes purposely close to a farce to good affect.

I didn’t guess the ending

These books are such a great escape. I always try to figure out the ending. But I miss it every time. Susan Duerden does a great job of differentiating the characters too.

Sweet and fun

This was a sweet and fun romance. You definitely have to suspend reality and reason to accept the twists and turns, but you have to do that with all historical romances to some extent. I guessed the two major twists right off but was curious how the author would make it come to pass. I will download the next in the series.

Fun Read

It’s a treat to find Susan Duerden narrating romance again. I hope she stays with this series. Elizabeth’s new series will be delightful if they contain new interesting plots like Emmaline’s.
