Publisher's Summary

Franciscan priest Richard Rohr feels that there is no more challenging spiritual issue than the “problem of the self". Most of contemporary spiritual teaching, he believes, is still trying to inspire and fortify the private self, the autonomous "I". Even much church work is trying to evangelize and sacramentalize what many would call "the false self". Basic transformation is not expected, but merely a new set of beliefs and practices or loyal membership in a new group. This only confirms the disguise of the ego, but does not truly offer a "new creation". Both the individual and society remain largely unchanged.

Rohr suggests that until the false assumptions of Western individualism are clearly faced and experienced by religious believers (and they are the only ones fully prepared to face it), there will be no real breakthroughs for Christianity or any religion.

He makes reference to the work of Ken Wilber, Thomas Merton, Eckhart Tolle, the mystical tradition especially of Julian of Norwich, and the new paradigms offered by quantum physics. In a presentation that embraces the challenge, inspiration, and the genuine hope that is offered by the Gospel of Jesus, Rohr illustrates the implications of transformation both for individuals and for society at large.

    "Absolutely remarkable"

As usual, Richard Rohr is profound and enlightening. This is really a special piece. Not a book, but rather a recording from the lecture series, True Self, False Self. Worth listening to over and over again.

    "Changed my life."

Richard cuts through the false self. His stories and self deprecating humor helps break it down. I felt as if I was at the conference.

    "More inspiration"

This was an execellent lecture. My only issue is he refers to the hand outs and it would have been great to have these available. It would be 5 stars with the hand outs.

    "A CHALLENGING PILGRIMAGE"
What made the experience of listening to True Self, False Self the most enjoyable?

Fr. Rohr is articulate and so widely read. He makes the Gospel personal and relevant while challenging the culturally based interpretation.

What other book might you compare True Self, False Self to and why?

I would consider this a good sequel to Rohr's Falling Upwards.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I felt a sense of joy in how the Gospel opened up through his lecture

    Any additional comments?

He spent a good amount of time responding to people's questions.

    "True Self, False Self"

This is a truly beautiful audio book. Love Richard Rohr's explanation of the true self (and the false self) and how we can transcend the false self through our experiences of life, getting us back in touch with our authentic being :) Couldn't recommend this audio more. I have recently converted from Catholism to Buddhism, but feel that his words have so much to offer to people of all faiths. It is wonderfully insightful, discussing the biology of transcendence, how we are 'wired' to find something greater than the 'little I'. I have listened to it so many times and got my husband listening with me I was so moved by his words which are delivered with humour and simplicity. They should make this audio a part of schools' religious education....it is so, so powerfully transformative!

    "excellent and thought provoking"

To be aware of our false self is so vital if we are to truly function in the way God intends us to. The more aware we become of this false self the more we will come to realise our true self and the potential we have to truly be what we are before God and others

    "Simple and true"

The message is simple and true. And we get advice on how to grow. How to live a happier and fulfilling life. How to let the kingdom come.
Steve Peters' chimp paradox is a contemporary way of explaining the same idea. I prefer the simplicity of this version.
