The victims return from death to walk the earth.

When a massive military operation fails to contain the plague of the living dead it escalates into a global pandemic. In one fell swoop, the necessities of life become much more basic. Gone are petty everyday concerns. Gone are the amenities of civilized life. Yet a single law of nature remains: Live, or die. Kill, or be killed. On one side of the world, a battle-hardened General surveys the remnants of his command: a young medic, a veteran photographer, a brash Private, and dozens of refugees, all are his responsibility-all thousands of miles from home. Back in the United States, an Army Colonel discovers the darker side of Morningstar virus and begins to collaborate with a well-known journalist to leak the information to the public...The Morningstar Saga has begun.

    "Love the concept"

If you can get past his ignorance of the military the book is great. Story line is one of my favorites. After reading the first book, i had to get the second. I hope the third one will be released.

    God rest Z's sole.

    Story
"Amateur, not even close to the others in quality"

If you're hard up for zombie stories, sure, but try others first. Some list this zombie story along with the likes of Day by Day Armageddon or Dead City (Excellent books). But its not even close.

The story and setting are good enough, that's what drew me in. But the author can't handle the intricacies of his story to make it believable leaving large plot holes

I loved that they had a firing line set up along the Suez...but wtf, where was the rest of the military? Recht could go great places, what with his main character a *general* who promptly goes AWOL and hops off the very safe and powerful destroyer to go wandering from coast to coast with rag tag refugees with little food and ammo, when he really had the whole US military at his disposal! Oh, and that stupid macho fist fight...ugh.

Too many stupid and nonsensical decisions being made throughout the book.

Recht made some good set ups but fumbled all his chances to make them any good. Hear he's dead now. Oh well, RIP, don't get back up!

Just imagine reading a Michael Bay movie. If you like the sound of that, then enjoy! If not, stay far, far away.

    "Good story."

Hey I love zombie books, movies, etc... and I'm pretty picky. This one held my attention and was a good listen. I can't wait for the sequel.

"I tried.. I really did try!"

To like this book. I love zombies. However, it takes more than zombies as the topic to be a good book. First of all,in any story, the writer needs to be consistent! You can't define the characteristics of a zombie and then conveniently change them later with no explanation as to why they suddenly changed, as though you forgot what you said in the first pace. For example, there is a scene where doctor examines a dead zombie and notes that there is no sign of blood flow from a wound (of course not, zombies don't gush blood as they are animated corpes with no pulse or heart beat, etc). Fine. Then, in later scenes, red blood splashes about when zombies are shot - just for the gore affect. It doesn't work - choose one or the other and try to remember what you chose... Lazy, cheap writing...

Besides those sort of inconsistencies, the plot is weak and there are seemingly endless, boring action scenes without a lot of plot or developed enough characters to make them at all interesting and they drag on and are difficult to follow or care about... and they take the story nowhere. The characters are completely uninteresting and uncompelling in any way. The story just meanders around in no real direction, with pointless sub-plots about some reporter being tortured or whatever... I really struggled to make it through the whole thing, and I am a very patient reader, and completely forgot about it a day later... Had to have a real think about it to remember enough to even write this review.

No one likes a critic, and I hate to be one, but just want to give a view to help people decide to spend their money or not, and this is honestly my opinion - a MUCH better choice would be Word War Z.

If I were a zombie, and this book were quivering coils of spongey gray matter I'd be a'feasting. More zombies please.

    Story
"Another faceless zombie-novel among the horde."
Would you try another book from Z. A. Recht and/or Oliver Wyman?

I wasn't really a fan of this book but I didn't hate so much as to avoid the author. I am interested to know where this particular series appears in the chronology of his works because I feel like he's got a lot of improving to do. Oliver Wyman is solid as narrators go and i'm not averse to checking out a book based only on his involvement.

What could Z. A. Recht have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

I'm interested to know where this series/book appears in the chronology of his works because I feel like the author has a lot of room for improvement. That said, it isn't awful, it could just be way better.

Which character – as performed by Oliver Wyman – was your favorite?

None. That was actually one of the issues I had with the book. I was absolutely uninterested in the characters. At one point a character does something to appear compassionate but it seems only to backfire. There is nothing offensive about any of the characters, there's just simply nothing to like. There is a point where a character means to show his literary prowess by quoting Shakespeare. Sure, that works, but it's as vanilla and obvious as showing you like music by singing Beatles songs. We get it, thanks.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Am I a sociopath? I didn't really have any sort of emotional reaction to this book.

    Any additional comments?

The story never picked up enough steam to get me interested. Given the state of the zombie novel (Yeah, you know that whole there-are-a-buttload deal) it is not unique or interesting enough to stand out, or spend a credit on. I get that it is a series, but this particular book's end seemed really abrupt to me and wasn't enough to convince me to stick with it. Sure there's nothing particularly offensive about this story but there is also nothing particularly intriguing.

I listen to books while running and walking my dog so on average about an hour day and like books that have a good pace to them.

    Story
"It was about what I expected"
If you could sum up Plague of the Dead in three words, what would they be?

    Typical Zombie Fiction

What did you like best about this story?

I liked the multi-perspective approach taken by the author.

Which character – as performed by Oliver Wyman – was your favorite?

I found many of the characters to be two dimensional and lacking some of the depth I have found in other genre novels. That being said the range of characters present their own personalities and for the most part are well defined by the narrator.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I was frustrated at various times during this book especially during some of the tactical scenes which to me showed General Sherman to be an inept tactician given the known nature of the threat being faced.

    Any additional comments?

This book was enjoyable enough to keep me coming back for more although i am hoping there is more character development as the series moves forward.
