Publisher's summary
Eric Riordan was once a wealthy man leading a comfortable, easy life. Until one day Gabriel, his oldest friend, Marine Corps veteran, and a former mercenary, told him how the world was going to end.
He did his best to prepare. He thought he was ready for anything.
He was wrong.
As the dead rise up to devour the living, one man finds himself struggling to survive in the ruins of a shattered world. Alone, isolated, and facing starvation, his only chance is to flee to the Appalachians and join forces with Gabriel. But the journey will not be easy, and along the way his humanity, his will to live, and his very soul will be tested.
This is the beginning. This is his story.

Story
The Superpox-99 virus has wiped out nearly the entire human race. Governments have collapsed. Cities have become graveyards filled with unspeakable horror. People have resorted to scavenging from the dead, or taking from the living. The entire industrialized world has become a wasteland of abandoned cars, decaying bodies, and feral animals. To stay alive, U.S. Deputy Marshal Mason Raines must forage for food, water, and gasoline while outgunning those who seek to take advantage of the apocalyptic anarchy. Together with his giant Irish wolfhound, Bowie, he aligns with survivors of the town of Boone in a life and death struggle against a gang of violent criminals. With each deadly encounter, Mason is force to accept his place as one of the nation's few remaining lawmen. In a world now populated by escaped convicts, paranoid mutants, and government hit squads, his only hope to save the townspeople is to enforce his own brand of frontier justice.

Story
Three terrorist attacks are launched from freighters against the United States. Only one fully succeeds, but in the blink of an eye all of the country west of the Rocky Mountains is transformed into the technological equivalent of the 18th century - no electricity, no computers, no electronics of anykind, or any of the amenities of modern life that depend on them. This is the story of ordinary and extraordinary people, high and low, who struggle to survive in a mortally wounded nation, as America's enemies within and without circle for the kill.

A narrator can make or break a book.
I am not done with this book, but i felt the need to put out some much needed information that i seemed to have missed in others reviews. The narrator is terrible. He cant do female voices well, at all. I dont expect perfection when a narrator is doing a womans voice, but this guy makes them sound like Jim Carrey doing Vera Di Milo on In Living Color. Actually, half the men get that same narration as well.
The story is decent, and i eventually can focus on that. But man, if the narrator was good i know id really enjoy this book.

Slow but riveting
This book started out slow for my taste. And the narrator was lacking.
After a slow start, things seem to pick up and there was no turning back from there.
Can't wait for my next credit to continue the saga.

Darn good
Straight forward zombie story. What makes this good is the character development. I felt like Cook did a good job of creating a dozen unique stories.
I'm looking forward to the next book in this series. Seems like the books just get better from the reviews.

good series...
Would you consider the audio edition of No Easy Hope to be better than the print version?
This series so far has done a great job by not "jumping the shark" they keep the focus on the main characters and the daily struggle to survive. They keep it interesting without putting so much of the filler that I've noticed a lot of the novels today are doing. Surviving the dead is what I would consider a great example of a survivor horror story. The zombies are there in ample but they don't saturate the plot, which many books tend to do. If you're a fan of undead apocalypse style stories I highly recommend these books, they are well written and the author has certainly done his technical research.... Enjoy.
What other book might you compare No Easy Hope to and why?
I'd compare this with the first book by the late Z.A Recht.
What does Guy Williams bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
He was a good narrator, and doesn't overdo it I like it.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
it's too long of a book to listen to all at once but its certainly interesting enough that I didn't just put it in when I wanted some white noise while I did something else. You do want to pay attention and enjoy the story.

This book keeps you on the edge of your seat and you won't put it down until you are done reading it. Warning if you get scared easily don't read this. I would not be surprised if this book it's converted into a movie at some point. I'm ready for part two.
