Accountant turned professional monster hunter Owen Zastava Pitt managed to stop the nefarious Old Ones' invasion plans last year, but as a result made an enemy out of one of the most powerful beings in the universe. Now an evil death cult known as the Church of the Temporary Mortal Condition wants to capture Owen in order to gain the favor of the great Old Ones. The Condition is led by a fanatical necromancer known as the Shadow Man. The government wants to capture the Shadow Man and has assigned the enigmatic Agent Franks to be Owen's full-time bodyguard, which is a polite way of saying that Owen is monster bait.
With supernatural assassins targeting his family, a spy in their midst, and horrific beasties lurking around every corner, Owen and the staff of Monster Hunter International don't need to go hunting, because this time the monsters are hunting them. Fortunately, this bait is armed and very dangerous.

"This lighthearted, testosterone-soaked sequel to 2009's Monster Hunter International will delight fans of action horror with elaborate weaponry, hand-to-hand combat, disgusting monsters, and an endless stream of blood and body parts." (Publishers Weekly)
I enjoyed the first MHI book the same way one enjoys a good 80's Action Flick. Just turn your brain off and ride the ride. It was a lot of fun. Monster Hunter Vendetta starts out exactly the same way. Owen Pitt and the rest of the MHI team are killing baddies and making bank. Some of it is over the top cheesy (Internet Trolls and Gangsta Gnomes), and some of it is wicked-cool (Oni. Mother of God, the Oni are awesome).
Then the Old Ones walk in and the book takes a surprising turn. Correia's imagination had already Impressed me with the Grimnoir Series, and it struck again here. This book gets spectacularly dark and weird. What started as a book I could listen to while driving became a book I couldn't stop listening to.
It's a great ride.
This book reads like watching a fun B-movie. Not complicated, the characters aren't very complex, but it is fun and entertaining. I actually liked the first book a little better than this one. Some of the concepts and action are a little to unbelievable for me, though it was clearly never intended to be a realistic believable series. If you don't want to think, and just want an action packed entertaining story with plenty of explosions, then this story fits the bill.
The narrator does a good job once again, no complaints here!
Yes! There is something for everyone in this series. You will want to keep listening well into the night even when you know you should be a responsible adult and get some sleep before going back to work!
Everything! After I finished book one I immediately bought two more. I didn't think it was possible for Larry Correia to be able to top the first book but so far he has surprised me. Each book gets better and better!
It is hard to pick a favorite. I like them all. I do like Sam and Milo a lot. I also like Franks yeah I know he's a Fed but he is growing on me.
I did laugh a few times. It kept me entertained! I'll admit I almost cried in one part but I will leave that out of the review as it is a spoiler.
I love Oliver Wyman's narrations very gifted at what he does.
It's hard to top a freshman effort firing on all cylinders, the creates a new universe and wets if cataclysm and apocalypse on the grandest of scales, and carry it soundly into the sequel.
Correia ratchets it up to 11 & goes for broke. necromancers, more Lovecraftian Elder God's mixed w Robert E Howards sense of righteous fury.
violence, honor, blood, fury, get paid.
I enjoyed this book but it was a little slow and predictable at times. Narration was great.
So I am almost done with book 2, and had to read the synopsis for the next few books to find out if I was going to want to grab my own gun and rage if this one didn't end well. I won't say if I did or didn't, but I will say that I will be downloading the next book to find out what happens. There is a reason I wait for a series to have a bunch of books in it before I start it- I hate waiting for the next one. (Can anyone say GRRM???) That may mean I am late to the party, but at least I am not disappointed.
I really do like how the characters develop in these stories- and that you care if they live or die, or something in between. The good guys and the bad guys (or whatever they are) are very compelling- they come to life in the descriptions, but they don't bog the story line down in the least as can happen. The dialogue's are great with lots of black humor and references, thrown in nicely. Sometimes I laugh out loud in the most inappropriate places.
Is it ok that I find reasons to get in my Jeep and drive just so I can listen???
I throughly enjoy all of the books I have listened to by Larry and this one does not disappoint. I would recommend this book if you enjoy the supernatural/syfy genre.
this is a great series, each book gets better and better. I can't believe it yin this long for me to find these books but i HIGHLY recommend then to anyone who is obsessed with guns ands monsters.
Jack of all trades, Master of None
I loved the story and how it draws you into the story. Would love to work for MHI.
Love the sieries, yes I am part of the small collection of gun nut super nerds, first time through the sieries i spent in the reloading room pulling the lever on an RCBS rock chucker every friday,
