Publisher's summary

The next adventure in the High Republic begins expanding the new era of Star Wars, with a story set generations before Light of the Jedi.

It is an age of exploration. Jedi travel the galaxy, expanding their understanding of the Force and all the worlds and beings connected by it. Meanwhile, the Republic, led by its two chancellors, works to unite worlds in an ever-growing community among near and distant stars.

On the close-orbiting planets of Eiram and E’ronoh, the growing pains of a galaxy with limited resources but unlimited ambition are felt keenly. The two worlds’ hatred for each other has fueled half a decade of escalating conflict and now threatens to consume surrounding systems. The last hope for peace emerges when heirs from the planets’ royal families plan to marry.

Before lasting peace can be established, an assassination attempt targeting the couple tilts Eiram and E’ronoh back into all-out war. To save both worlds, Jedi Knight Gella Nattai volunteers to uncover the culprit, while Chancellor Kyong appoints her own son, Axel Greylark, to represent the Republic’s interests in the investigation.

But Axel’s deep distrust of the Jedi sparks against Gella’s faith in the Force. She’s never met such a puffed-up, privileged party boy, and he’s never met a more self-serious, relentless do-gooder. The harder they work to untangle the shadowy web of the investigation, the more complicated the conspiracy appears to be. With accusations flying and potential enemies in every shadow, the pair will have to work together to have any hope of bringing the truth to light and saving both worlds.

great performance... meh storyline

Mark Thompson is great as usual. it's the only reason I finished the book. maybe future books will tie this in better, but I don't really see the relevance of this title to the overall high republic story arc. Even still it wasn't very engaging.

Pretty Enjoyable!

Not a great story but really good, kinda written like a YA novel. However, I love the characters and their Romeo meets Juliet in a Star Wars setting. My only fault with the book is that it took so long with character building that in the end there wasn't enough action and mystery. Still had a good time.

A bit boring

It was hard to follow along, the characters weren’t all that compelling. Two chancellors was a weird concept. Oh well.

Not As Bad as The Fallen Star...

...still not good. The best way I can summarise the quality of the actual story is this: "These aren't wedding guests, they're bounty hunters!" is an actual line from the book. It isn't a joke. It isn't meant in some sort of facetious manner, it's meant to be a serious revelation.

Look. Marc Thompson could make about anything sound good. His performance is - as always - phenomenal. The story, though, is just bad. If you enjoy villains who are evil for the sake of being evil, if you enjoy characters being established as being one way only to immediately turn 180° for no apparent reason, if you live for stories where major plot points occur between paragraphs without so much as a passing mention, if you prefer your Jedi just be wizards and the force straight up magic, then this is the story for you. Save your money and your time, this one can and should be passed over.

A different story but still good

I was expecting a continuation of the series so far but this one was a still a solid story about two worlds at war and some great character building.

More good High Republic Content

After Path of Deceit, I was curious to see how this would be. I overall really liked Convergence, but didn’t feel a large love toward it. If anything, listen to it to meet Axel Greylark, and hear more great performances by Marc Thompson.

The romance and story of this one is something...

It's quite compelling and understanding where the story goes with this one... a bit confusing to follow some of it but a really decent listen it is.

amazing adventure in the high republic

Mark Thompson kills it as always. Story was unique and intriguing with fun characters. it's also a good tie in and back story to the main series. I can't wait for the next book in this series. this is a good prequel

It was ok

It had too many similar characters and names. Too many different things going on at one time.
