Editorial reviews

Charlotte “Charley” Davidson is not your stereotypical Grim Reaper. She’s sexy, sassy, and likes to help dead people with unfinished business before they cross. She’s more of a bright light kind of girl than a hood with an axe. For her day job, Charley is an Albuquerque private investigator and a consultant to her police detective uncle. Lately, her nights have been steamed up with dreams of a hot mystery lover who may or may not be real. It’s chick-lit meets paranormal with a touch of mystery in the buzz-worthy First Grave on the Right.

Inevitably, this book will be compared to Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum series. They both have feisty female protagonists, snappy dialogue, and zany characters. Veteran narrator Lorelei King also performs the Stephanie Plum books and is well-cast in this novel. What makes her fantastic in the Plum series is her ability to define the voices of all the secondary characters and inject them with interest and distinct personalities. In this performance, she does not disappoint. King seamlessly switches among the characters and has fantastic comedic timing. She elevates the work and keeps the laughs coming.

This is a debut novel from Darynda Jones. It will not be her last; this is clearly a launch for a series. There’s quite a bit of set-up as Charley begins to understand more of her abilities and the presence of other supernatural beings. Jones has created an interesting premise and characters. The mystery element is weak, however, and the writing is on the mediocre side. Jones is at her best with witty dialogue and keeps things moving at a brisk pace. Overall, it’s a fun, breezy listen and an enjoyable escape.

Fans of Janet Evanovich, Lorelei King, and paranormal romance will want to give this new series a listen. Julie MacDonald

Publisher's summary

First Grave on the Right is the smashing, award-winning debut novel that introduces Charley Davidson: part-time private investigator and full-time Grim Reaper.

Charley sees dead people. That's right, she sees dead people. And it's her job to convince them to "go into the light." But when these very dead people have died under less than ideal circumstances (i.e., murder), sometimes they want Charley to bring the bad guys to justice. Complicating matters are the intensely hot dreams she's been having about an Entity who has been following her all her life...and it turns out he might not be dead after all. In fact, he might be something else entirely.

This is a thrilling debut novel from Darynda Jones, an exciting newcomer to the world of paranormal romantic suspense.

First Grave on the Right is the winner of the 2012 Rita Award for Best First Book.

Charley Davidson

If you could sum up First Grave on the Right in three words, what would they be?

Witty, wicket, wild

What did you like best about this story?

Getting to know about who Charley is and her quirky ways and smart mouth.

What does Lorelei King bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Lorelei King has the talent that is unforgettable, she puts all the words in the right places at the right times and the enfencens right where they belong. Her voice is amazing, I enjoy all the books she's reads.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

You know it. I felt that way throughout the whole series. I will read them again , or listen to them again.

Any additional comments?

Darynda Jones I love all your books, you have kept me interested through all of them, I was on the edge of my seat, biting my nails, laughing like a fool and crying like a baby. Each book was as entertaining as the last. An I fell in love with Rayis, and desired to meet someone like him. That kind of look in a man does not exist at least not in this universe!
I've always been nuts for the bad boys. You know how to write men. Women will love these books men will be jealous. Thank you for a great story.
I'd love to see more like this.

Toatally fun! An escape you can't stop list

This little tale was a romp, lots of fun to see the characters unfold and develope and become a unique alternative universe.

Witty, grounded, vulnerable alternately insightful, intrspective and totally a shallow 20-something with an uncheckable libido, Charley is terrific. a great character to hang a novel on.

the narrator is creative and paces her dialog beautifully. Dhe enhanced thia book with her akill and command of pacing and timing.

Fun summer read!

Unexpected sex scenes kinda graphic

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

this book seems to be well written, but it is not my style. I do not like books with graphic sex scenes.

Would you ever listen to anything by Darynda Jones again?

sure

Which character – as performed by Lorelei King – was your favorite?

I love Lorelei King, that is why I tried the book. she is a great natator

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

no

Any additional comments?

wish I would have known about the detailed sex scenes. it just isn't something I like. if it is in a actual book I can skip over pages. it is not something easy to skip over in an audio book

Quarky , and comical with a a Elviraesk flavor

There is a quote that sets the tone for this novel and that is (do not fear death but be very wary of her).
