Publisher's summary

Divorced, desperate, and destitute, former restaurateur Defiance Dayne finds out she has been bequeathed a house by a complete stranger. She is surprised, to say the least, and her curiosity gets the better of her. She leaves her beloved Phoenix and heads to one of the most infamous towns in America: Salem, Massachusetts.

She's only there to find out why a woman she's never met would leave her a house, a veritable castle that has seen better days. The lawyer assigned to the case practically begs her to take it off her hands, mostly because she's scared of it. The inanimate structure that, as far as Dephne can tell, has never hurt a fly.

Though it does come with some baggage. A pesky neighbor who wants her gone. A scruffy cat who's a bit of a jerk. And a handyman bathed in ink who could moonlight as a supermodel for GQ.

She decides to give it three days, and not because of the model. She feels at home in Salem. Safe. But even that comes to a screeching halt when people begin knocking on her door day and night, begging for her help to locate their lost objects.

Come to find out, they think she's a witch. And after a few mysterious mishaps, Dephne is beginning to wonder if they're right.

What I hoped for

I didn’t know what to expect with this one. I listened to all the other Darynda books on audible and was hoping the same quirky, seductive fun was in this one. I was not disappointed. The cliffhanger has me at the edge of my seat. The narrator is new to be but did a phenomenal job! I will be listening to the next in the series!

So....it’s ok...

I loved Darynda’s Charlie Davidson series. However, after awhile it can get a bit dull but I loved the characters so much I didn’t mind and finished the series. This series seems to be a bit too similar to that one though. You have the sarcastic main character and cooky best friend. As well as dark and brooding male love interest. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still worth a listen but I’m hoping the next book has more excitement. I still love Darynda and think she’s an amazing author though.

Great Series 5/5

I met Darynda Jones, as an author, with her Charley Davidson series. It was excellent—I couldn’t wait for the next book from book 1 to 13 and novellas too. Thank you

Now I am reintroduced D.J. with Betwixt & Between. I have read Books 1, 2, & 3---I am excited and waiting for the next book again. This series is so much fun—A hoot to listen to.
Tarci Odom is now the voice of Betwixt & Between for me—she has done an excellent job and I hope continues to do so.

I will purchase, enjoy and want more of this series

Thank you Darynda Jones—Keep them coming!

Engrossing

I found myself gently pulled into a crazy world full of unreal occurrences. The writing is not without flaws but nothing jarring that isn’t quickly overlooked or forgotten. The characters are interesting and I want to hear more about them and their adventures

New Series

I’m a fan of Darynda’s Charlie Davidson series so I thought I’d give this book a try. I like that the main character is 44, not 18-24. I like that Defiance has made mistakes in her life, but she’s still taking chances and starting over. I don’t like how over-the-top pigheaded and stupid she is for most of the book. I’m sorry to admit I would never have purchased the next book if I hadn’t borrowed Bewitched through my library’s Hoopla app, and found out it was heaps better. I’ve noticed that the first book in a series is quite often the weakest in terms of characters and storyline. I would rate this at 3.5, so I’m posting as 4.
Ms Odom was a good choice for narrating this book and does a great job voicing the different characters and emotions.

I wasn't sure if I was going to like this or not but I really really enjoyed it. the characters are very witty and relatable. so much so that I bought the last three books in the series. and they were all just as good as the first, which was refreshing as well. definitely recommend this series. and the narrator was on point. five stars all the way around

What a great begining.

beginning. think I have read all of Darynda Jones books. She is re as lly great at developing characters. She also has some of the best ideas for stories. The narration was done really well too.

I didn’t see that coming!

This is the story all about a woman who has gone from the top of the happy ladder to the last rung. She’s holding on for dear life... then after she falls to her knees, things start to look better. Or different. It’s a new shot at life. A start at least.

What happens you ask, well, it’s simple, she gets a house that’s left to her by... the grandmother she didn’t know existed.

Then, well, life throws her in a cauldron of undisguised mayhem and she gets a little magical.

I like the characters and how they all fit together. The food the bad and the magical all converge on Defiance in order to Neón her, confuse her and yeah, even try to take her out. There’s always that one idiot in the group. And then there is Percy, the house; well he’s a bucket of laughs.

I can’t wait to see what kind of mischief and shenanigans happens in the second book.
