Handlungszeitpunkt: Februar 1896: Cyril Overton wendet sich an Sherlock Holmes, da der beste Spieler seiner Rugby-Mannschaft ausgerechnet vor einem sehr wichtigen Spiel verschwunden ist. Eigentlich gab es keinen Grund für ihn zu verschwinden. Allerdings tauchte kurz zuvor ein seltsam aussehender Mann auf, dem der Spieler nach einem kurzen Gespräch folgte. Seitem wurde er nicht mehr gesehen.
