Pink was not what Eleanor Braddock ordered, but maybe it would soften the tempered steel of a woman who came through a war--and still had one to fight.
Eleanor Braddock, a spinster at 30, has long since dismissed any hope of marriage. But when a dying soldier whispers his final words, she believes her life can still have meaning and determines to find his widow. But this compassionate deed takes a harsh turn, and Eleanor finds herself dependent upon the richest woman in America and the most despised woman in Nashville--her aunt, Adelicia Acklen, mistress of Belmont Mansion. A clandestine act of kindness leads Eleanor to an unlikely path for her life--building an orphanage, a place that will house widows and orphans from the Civil War. And while Eleanor knows her own heart, she also knows her aunt will never approve.
Marcus von Quint, Archduke of the House of Habsburg and second in line to the Austrian throne, arrives in Nashville in search of a life he determines, instead of one determined for him. Collaborating with botanist Luther Burbank, Marcus seeks to combine his own passion for nature with his expertise in architecture. But his plans to incorporate natural beauty into the design of the orphanage run contrary to the wishes of practical, frugal Eleanor, who sees his ideas as costly nonsense. Yet as the construction project continues, Marcus and Eleanor find common ground--and a love neither of them expected.
But Marcus is not the man Adelicia has chosen for Eleanor to marry, and even if he were, someone who knows Marcus's secrets is about to reveal them all.

I I usually read British historical novels but thoroughly enjoyed this one. The subject matter reminds us of the widow's war. heartbreaking to read about the hungry kids.
Tamera Alexander did not disappoint! I love Civil War and post-Civil War era stories. So many lost everything due to the war. I enjoyed listening to Eleanor's journey in finding her purpose after everything seemed lost. God had not forgotten her. He had huge plans! How wonderful to see her choose a life of service!
Her romance with Marcus is like a fairy tale!! He is charming and handsome, but also talented and creative!
If you are a person who likes the details to be in the story, you will love this book!! I love to know what everyone is thinking and all the details about situations being described and Tamera Alexander does a wonderful job with this!! I highly recommend her books!!
Follow different genres in my selection of books. Like mysteries of all kinds. Absolutely love audio books.
Tamera Alexander brought this Christian romance to the readers in a wonderful way. It's refreshing to find a Christian romance novel in the audio books.
Linda Stephens has a clear voice and is easy to follow along with.
I highly recommend this book.
liked the characters but they were static. kind of blah ending. could see how the book would end after the first hour of listening. was right on all accounts. like it when a book surprises me, not this one. narrator is awesome
This book was written well. The inclusion of some phrases in German was natural and not overbearing. It helped in understanding. The story so seemed to be about real people--the kind that a reader can get invested in. I liked the voice it was written in and the back and forth in people's minds.
